Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Thailand

There are a wide variety of hotels in Phuket, and it is very important to decide before travelling exactly what you expect from your holiday and stay on this beautiful island.

It is true that Phuket is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world, but it is rapidly expanding into much more than just a quiet beach spot.

With so many different beaches available, and with so many different categories of hotels, we sincerely hope that the following will be of some use.

The hotels detailed below range from some of the most expensive to some of the cheapest, in no particular order.

At many of the hotels we review below, there are links that offer you some of the best rates on the internet, with secure and instant reservations.

Have you made your vote yet for your favourite hotel in Thailand or elsewhere in Asia? If not vote now in the Premier Travel Awards for Excellence.

The Laguna Phuket

The Laguna Phuket, comprises of 5 different excellent International hotels, a golf resort, and a few shops and restaurants.

The hotels are the infamous Banyan Tree, Sheraton Laguna (member of Starwood's The Luxury Collection), the Dusit Laguna Phuket, the Laguna Beach Resort, and the more moderately priced Allamanda.

The Laguna is an excellent choice if you are travelling with family, with many different activities to occupy your and the children's time. The enclosed environment of the Laguna ensures the utmost privacy and security.

The Laguna also offers some of the best meeting and convention facilities in Thailand, with activities such as "Quest" which is the much sought after management training course (the physical and outdoor variety), an enormous Marquee facility that houses the larger functions, and the knowledge that you are just far enough away from the main night spots to ensure everyone gets to the meeting on time, yet close enough, when you have decided that enough is enough and its time to party.

The golf course is world class standard and only a five minute buggy ride from any of the hotels in the Laguna. Which brings us nicely back to your most difficult decision which hotel to opt for?

Banyan Tree - this hotel is famous, not only for the International standard golf course that sits right outside the reception, nor the award winning spa that offers you an amazing assortment of relaxing and invigorating treatments, nor even the multitude of famous guests such as Jean Claude Van Damne, Claudia Sheffer, too mention but a few, but also the fact that the exclusive bungalows are all very private and are all self contained. You enjoy this private surrounding with the luxury of your own pool, room service that can be cooked in front of you, during a romantic dinner for two, and a numerous amount of other tantalizing choices that could leave you with one enormous problem; Will you ever leave?!

Allamanda - is a unique property, that offers some very unusual accommodation. There are duplexes, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments or rooms, in fact this is much more of a condotel style property that really wants you to feel as if you are home away from home. It is again a great place for families, and the hotel does offer a numerous amount of activities for children including an all important baby sitting service. This is also the cheaper of the five properties in the Laguna, offering some excellent rates.

Dusit Laguna - The Dusit Laguna Phuket Resort & Spa was the first hotel at the Laguna to open. It is also one of the few which sits directly on the beach. The hotel offers modern high quality accommodation in a very spacious setting that allows guests to quite easily forget that it actually has over X number of rooms. The gardens are well manicured and the pool a relaxing environment to spend hours dozing or reading a good book. While this hotel is part of the Laguna it feels very much like a stand alone property, and its spaciousness and convenience makes it feel very intimate. For those looking to truly escape the Dusit Laguna Phuket Resort & Spa offers guests the Angsana Spa, which has a whole range of treatments and special programmes to choose from. See pictures, special rates etc from the Dusit Laguna Phuket Resort & Spa.

Sheraton Laguna - this hotel is part of Starwood's The Luxury Collection, which means that it is the highest quality of Sheraton hotels. Also being part of the Starwood Group means that you can earn points if you are a member of its Preferred Guest programme. The hotel is well appointed with new spa facilities that comes from the experienced Banyan Tree. It is probably the most popular among large convention/incentive and meeting business and has all the facilities that you will ever need.

Laguna Beach Resort - previously the Laguna Beach Club, is an award winning hotel. It is very private and those that have stayed there say that it may well be the best in the Laguna (Banyan Tree would disagree of course!). Not being quite as large as other properties it allows you to fall into a feeling of quiet relaxation and the hotel prides itself on its immaculate personalised service.

Kamala Bay

A small and peaceful beach area only 15 minutes or so from Patong Beach. Great place for families or people looking for a quiet relaxing holiday as the waves are not rough and the quiet environment makes for a great holiday.

Kamala Bay Terrace Resort - lovely little hotel, that is the only international hotel on this quiet strip of beach. The rooms are built up on the hill, and the hotel offers wonderful views of the sparkling Andaman Sea. Special rates, pictures and online reservations available at: Kamala Bay Terrace Resort Phuket.

Patong Beach

This beach is the busiest of all the beaches in Phuket, and is located where all the shops and infamous bars are. So, if you are looking for a beautiful beach, and want to be right in the midst of all the action during the day as well as the night, then this is your place.

Amari Coral Beach Resort - Located at the end of Patong Beach which leads to Karon, Kata beaches etc. Full review to come soon. See pictures, special rates and make online reservations for this hotel.

Millennium Resort Patong Phuket: If you choose to stay in the Patong area of Phuket, whether with family, friends, alone or for business then there are few better hotels than the Millennium Resort Patong Phuket, we just wish it would change the name of its wings. Read also: Our Review of the Millennium Resort Patong Phuket.

Novotel Coralia Phuket: Is right on the corner of Patong Beach, close to the excellent collection of restaurants likes Baan Rim Pa etc. It is up on a hill and offers some splendid views of the beach and sunset. Although not directly on the beach they do have three different swimming pools on different levels that run into each other, and is only a 5 minute buggy ride to the beach. This is a great hotel for families as they do offer some wonderful activities. See pictures, information, special rates and online reservations. Special rates, pictures and online reservations are available for the Novotel Coralia Phuket.

Impiana Phuket Cabana Resort - This lovely hotel features only 80 chalet-styled cottages. It is the only hotel in Patong that is directly on the beach. Very closely located to all the nightlife and shopping. A nice quiet hotel with a luxurious feel to it. One of the more expensive in the Patong area. See pictures, check rates and availability.

Baan Sukhothai - This well kept secret is again a small property. It is located in Soi Bagna, where all the nightlife is, and does not have any beach front, but it is only a quick 4 minutes walk to the beach. From the outside, this hotel does not look very special, however once inside it is pleasantly surprising! It is set out with small villas that comprise of 3 bedrooms. Each has its own living area and separated bedroom. The bathrooms are quite large (long) with a separate shower and bathtub in each of the villa style rooms. There is a small relaxing swimming pool as well. This hotel also offers very reasonable rates from 1,500 up depending on the season. Check availability and rates at this hotel (opens in a new window).

The Club Andaman - They offer exceptionally good rates, and the location is wonderful, as it is just across the road from the beach. They offer traditional hotel style rooms and also bungalows. The gardens and pool are lovely, and really help to create a relaxed resort atmosphere.

Holiday Inn Phuket - This hotel is located at the far end of Patong Beach away from the majority of bars and shops, it is a nice mid market hotel, with excellent facilities for kids. Including, there own private sanctuary within your room that comprises of bunk beds, computer games, television, and a curtain not allowing parents in !! Great hotel for families, and is popular with the German market. Special Rates, Pictures and Reservations for the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket.

Thara Hotel - is located opposite the Cabana. It is much more of a budget property and is ideal for singles or couples.

CN Bungalows - There is cheap, and then there is cheap. At THB 850 a night, you will get a bed, en suite bathroom, in a nice clean yet very simple room. This is not really a bungalow, more of a small budget hotel without swimming pool. We have stayed here and were happy with it. It is located just off the infamous Soi Bagnal. We do not recommend this hotel for families.

Nakalay Beach / Bay

This beach or bay only has the one hotel. The beach itself is great, but swimming in the ocean can be a little difficult, as there are a lot of stones. Having said this, it is still a great destination only 15 minutes by car from Patong, and with great facilities including one of the biggest swimming pools in Asia.

The Thavorn Beach Village - This luxurious hotel is a very impressive property with Thai style Villas (4 rooms one villa/2 floors) surrounding the pool and giving direct access from the balcony on the ground floor. The rooms also extend up the hill, and offer stunning views of the sea and Patong in the close distance. Each room has a large bathroom with separate shower, separate toilet and bathtub; there is also a Jacuzzi bath on each of the balconies. They have an excellent Thai restaurant and a fully equipped spa and fitness centre. That is the luxurious side to the hotel, they also have bungalows which are for the more budget conscious and a lot more basic but still very nice.

Karon Beach

Found between Patong and Kata Beaches, Karon Beach runs along the coast road. It is a nice wide beach but some may say a little bare as it lacks the backdrop of lush green trees where the road can be found. We also feel strongly that bridges should be built over the road from the hotels to the beach. The road is not large, just two lanes, but it is long and straight, and cars as well as bikes do travel at quite high speeds at times, which can be a danger for those not paying attention.

Central Village Karon Village - Review to come soon. See more of this hotel with pictures, special rates and online reservations.

Central Waterfront Suites - Review to come soon. See more of this hotel with pictures, special rates and online reservations.

Kata Beach

Here you break away from the hectic world of Patong and can sit back and pretty much relax. The waves and current are a little stronger here than elsewhere so watch out, but they are still safe.

The Boathouse Phuket - This hotel claims to have the best wine cellar in Phuket, and is equally famous for its excellent food. The hotel was one of the first in Asia to personalise beach service, offering cold towels to guests who were enjoying the beach. If you would like an unpretentious hotel, where the food, ambiance, and service is good then this is a great choice.

The Kata Beach Hotel - next door to the Boathouse, a lovely hotel of a larger scale, and they have a very nice swimming pool. Great choice.

Other

Some of the less well known beaches are becoming more and more popular with the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa opening towards the North West of the Island and many other properties finding their own idyllic spot of paradise.

Layan Phuket - Review to come soon, however clients who have stayed at this hotel said that they were extremely impressed and that they can recommend it to anyone.
