Phuket has long been one of the world's favourite beach destinations. It offers amazing value for money, and has many different beaches to choose from depending on your tastes and needs.

Despite attracting millions of tourists from around the world, and gradually becoming a city rather than just a beach and holiday destination, Phuket long lacked one of the most important aspects of a holiday destination - shopping!

Of course, as with every beach destination in Thailand, there has always been the market-style shops selling fake this, fake that, handicrafts and a lot of other things you really do not need.

What Phuket lacked was quality shopping, you know - brand names (originals and not the fake variety), sales, air-conditioning, bars and a few restaurants for you to enjoy all under one easy-to-get-to roof.

There was one such attempt at a shopping centre along Soi Bangla, but it was never going to be a serious contender for what was available in Bangkok. Central also eventually opened what is an impressive shopping mall, but it isn't in the centre of the tourist areas, so unless you have your own transport it costs a fair bit just to visit.

Then came along Jungceylon. Not only can this amazing shopping mall compete hands down with some of the malls in Bangkok, but it is located between two to four minutes from the sand of Patong Beach, and just seconds away from the infamous Soi Bangla in Phuket.

You could not get a better location for an hotel in Patong if you tried, and that is exactly where the Millennium Patong Beach Phuket is located.

Being adjacent to such an important landmark in Patong, means that you have a wide variety of restaurants and bars, plus of course shopping, right on your doorstep without even the need of stepping outside, what more could you want?

The hotel comprises two wings - the Lakeside and the Beachside. The hotel does itself no favours in calling the wings by these names as there is no lake, and nor is the hotel, in any stretch of the imagination, by the beach. Some could even call this misleading, which is a shame, as in our view the hotel should be proud of its excellent location.

The Beachside wing features a total of 197 rooms while the Lakeside has 224. The Lakeside is the plusher of the two, but both offer quality accommodation and you will not be disappointed with either wing.

Both wings are built with the rooms around an atrium making the lobby's of both suitably airy and light, perfect for a resort close to the beach. Both wings also have their own pool and restaurants, although guests from either wing can use whichever pool or restaurants they prefer.

All rooms at the Millennium Resort Patong Phuket feature WiFi, LAN, electronic in-room safe, complimentary water, quality TVs with a good selection of international channels, powerful showers and/or large bathtubs and comfortable bedding.

Superior rooms, mainly found in the Beachside wing, feature separate showers without bathtubs while the slightly larger Deluxe rooms which are in the plusher Lakeside have both separate shower and bathtubs.

One of the most sought after room categories, popular because of the direct pool access is the Cabana Room. The 40 sqm Cabana Rooms offer a private terrace and personal Jacuzzi with direct access to the pool. These stylish rooms also include a complimentary juice bar of mixed fruit and nuts. As there are only 18 of these rooms at the hotel they sell out fast, so book early!

For leisure, the hotel features two separate swimming pools, a reasonable size gym and an excellent little spa which has a wide range of treatments and therapies available.

Conclusion: If you choose to stay in the Patong area of Phuket, whether with family, friends, alone or for business then there are few better hotels than the Millennium Resort Patong Phuket, we just wish they would change the name of their wings.
