Currently
there are relatively few options for travelling to Bangkok's new
domestic and international airport - Suvarnabhumi. In fact, for the
first few years at least you have the simple choice, of either car,
whether it be hotel, private or taxi or of course the bus.
Getting
to the airport is simple enough and depending on time, should only take
around 40 minutes to an hour from the centre of Bangkok, and around 1
1/2 hours from Pattaya.
There
will be an Airport Express Bus Service which will operate to and from
hotels, various stops of importance in the city, suburbs and the
airport. We will update this page once the exact details have been
confirmed. Public Buses will also be available in central Bangkok from
Min Buri - Banggkapi, Happy Land, Victory Monument, On Nut BTS Station,
Samutprakarn and Rangsit. It is also likely that public buses will be
available to and from Pattaya but we are awaiting confirmation on this.
Another
service which travellers in other countries find extremely useful, the
city check-in will also be a part of the new airport's services. This
service, once established will allow passengers to check-in for their
flights, luggage and all while still in the city.
So
while, at the beginning at least, the options for getting to the airport
- Suvarnabhumi - are limited, construction is already underway for a
special train service. The train service is according to one official
expected to be ready by 2008 and take roughly 20 minutes to get to the
airport from the centre of Bangkok. It is believe that there will be 4
stations on the city line and it will run 24/7.
It
is important to point out, and you may well have noticed, that details
on transportation are still relatively sketchy. Senior officials we
spoke to who asked not to be quoted, admitted that some aspects of the
transport system etc would be under review as the airport goes live.
