British & Irish Lions Appoints First Full Time Managing Director

The British & Irish Lions has appointed Ben Calveley as Managing Director, the organisation’s first full time MD.

Having been on secondment with the organisation since April, Ben was the unanimous choice of the Board, led by Chairman Tom Grace.

Ben has a wealth of relevant experience and is currently Chief Operating Officer for Six Nations Rugby Limited, on secondment from the Rugby Football Union (RFU). During this secondment Ben has also led the Lions executive team and staff.

Tom Grace, British & Irish Lions Chairman, said, “Ben brings strong experience to our organisation from his background in the RFU in particular, and we are confident that he will bring the Lions to the next level of growth and strength. Ben joins a strong executive team and together they will drive the Lions forward.”

During his time with the RFU Ben was responsible for multiple lines of business including corporate strategy, policy, public affairs, international relations, project and risk management, CSR, fundraising and events.

Ben said, “I am honoured to have been appointed as British & Irish Lions Managing Director. It is an absolute privilege and thrill to be part of such a unique sporting body, which holds a special place in the hearts of all rugby fans. I am looking forward to working with the Board, Executive Team and staff as well as our many stakeholders on the development and implementation of the next phase of growth.”

Prior to the RFU Ben was part of the Senior Leadership Team at UK Sport as Head of Corporate and International Relations. Holder of an MBA, he began professional life as a mergers and acquisitions professional with Arthur Andersen and has been a rugby fan for many years. He is married with three young children.

His appointment as MD is effective from Monday, 12 November 2018.
