German hotelier Christian Metzner has been appointed General Manager of The Astor Hotel in Tianjin, a flagship of Starwood’s Luxury Collection brand in China.

Mr. Metzner was previously Hotel Manager at The Westin Tianjin, having first joined its pre-opening team as Director of Sales and Marketing three years ago.

Mr. Metzner has more than 15 years of senior hospitality industry management experience to the iconic 149-year old landmark in Tianjin’s financial and business district.

“I am both excited and honored. The Astor is without doubt one of China’s most prestigious and exclusive city hotels,” he said. “Life is a collection of experiences and I look forward to our team ensuring every guest has an indigenous, exceptional and collective experience unlocking the treasures of Tianjin.”

Opened in 1863, The Astor witnessed numerous political and historical dramas of a bygone era for China – including revolutionary leader Dr Sun Yat Sen commanding his forces from the hotel, and ‘Last Emperor’ Pu Yi and Empress Wan Rong dancing in the ballroom.

With 152 rooms and suites in both colonial and contemporary style, the hotel was restored to its former glory with complete renovation in 2010.
