ACI signed a Declaration of Commitment and Collaboration in Airport Excellence (APEX) in Safety with PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) in Jakarta, Indonesia on Monday, to launch the pilot APEX in Safety program in Asia Pacific.

APEX in Safety, a safety advancement initiative of ACI, is designed to help airports worldwide identify and address safety vulnerabilities and is built on the ICAO principles of information transparency, in a non-punitive, ‘just culture’ environment, where sharing data and best practices lead to excellence.

A team of safety experts from ACI, ACI Asia Pacific, ICAO and safety partners from airports, including Airports Authority of India, Incheon International Airport Corporation and Airports Company South Africa, will spend the following two weeks at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia to identify aerodrome safety issues and recommend rectification measures based on ACI Best Practices and ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices.

Mrs. Patti Chau, Regional Director of ACI Asia Pacific said, “I would like to thank PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero), all the Safety Partners and ICAO for their contribution to make this project possible. The team has spent so much time preparing for this safety review, looking for suitable safety partners, coordinating with all the parties involved and reviewing all the relevant information on Soekarno-Hatta International Airport for the Review to go ahead.”

The Safety Review Team will work with the Airport Management personnel of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in Indonesia to critically review the Safety Management System (SMS), airfield facilities and operations procedures at the airport.

The review will cover operational issues such as SMS documentation, aerodrome manual, emergency plan, runway friction measurement, wildlife control, aircraft refueling, airside vehicle operations, low visibility operations and staff training.

A report will be compiled by the Safety Review Team after the review and submitted to PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero), highlighting the findings during the review and provide recommended measures for rectification.

Mrs. Chau welcomes other airports in the region to join in this APEX in Safety initiative. “Safety is the true vocation for all of us in the aviation industry. We have a number of similar reviews in the pipeline.”
