Dubai Summer Surprises 2002 ready to surprise visitors with excellent line-up of events & promotions

Two weeks from now, Dubai Summer Surprises 2002 will begin with an excellent line-up of events and activities that will astonish and enchant the young visitors of Dubai. Created on the theme of 'Big Ones for Little Ones', DSS 2002 will have more than 250 exciting activities spread across seventy days beginning June 20, 2002. The major attractions of this years' DSS will be the Modhesh Fun City, the Children's City, the Eskimo Land and the Aqua Park. 

The ten fun filled weeks of Surprises is sponsored by Al Futtaim Group, Seven-up, Jumbo Electronics, Deira City Centre , Emarat, Mastercard, Dubai Shopping Malls Group, Saif Al Ghurair Group and Emirates Airlines. 

Entertainment events in shopping malls, workshops and exhibitions at various climate-controlled venues are being scheduled and detailed. The in-mall decoration material, including posters and banners featuring the DSS mascot is being installed. 

Modhesh Fun City

The new Modhesh Fun City located at the Airport Expo will itself be host to several entertainment shows and cartoon characters. Featuring 14 separate games, hobbies and entertainment zones, the 10,000 square metres Modhesh Fun City will host entertainment shows like Nickelodeon and Power Puff Girls. Famous cartoon characters like Dorothy the Dinosaur, Barney the Bear, Spiderman etc will visit the Fun City at regular intervals. Preparations to open the City on the 20th of June are well underway. 

Mall Activities

The Dubai Shopping Malls Group (DSMG) and the Government Departments are in the last stages of deciding and finalising the events schedule. 

Finishing touches are being given to the events of the In-Malls Events Group. The DSMG is also finalising the excellent promotion raffle for this DSS, which will be announced shortly. 

Hotels and Travel Agencies

The Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing has tied up with leading hotels to provide visitors a memorable holiday through DTCM's 'Dubai For Free' package which entitles visiting families one day free additional stay for every three days in hotels. Travel agents specialising in Inbound Travel are forecasting high summer occupancies, gauging the feedback from the GCC market to the offer. 

The Preparations for the Surprises

The opening week of DSS 2002 will be dedicated to Food Surprises organised by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing from June 20 to 26. Twenty-four hotels and ten shopping malls participating in the Food Surprises theme will be presenting cuisines from all over the world. Workshops, children's events and competitions will be held every evening at the malls, focussing on the theme of food. 

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, which is organising the Water Surprise is in the process of developing several special shows like the Water Bubbles show and the Artificial Rains for the Surprise which begins on the 27th of June. The formats for the character shows with Splashy, Dolphins and Frogs are being decided too. 

The Dubai Ports and Customs Authority, which will organise the Global Surprises from July 4th to the 10th will highlight the festival traditions of the world. 

The Organisers have chosen some of the most important festival traditions of the world including those from Brazil, Spain, USA, China, UK, India, Russia and a few Arab nations. Exciting formats for presenting these in a carnival across the malls are being discussed and finalised. 

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised Ice Surprises (July 11 to July 17) will bring the fascinating Eskimo Land to Dubai. Work on creating this Ice World is already underway. 

The Flower Surprises Organising Committee members from Dubai Municipality, the Sports Surprises Committee from the Department of Health & Medical Services and the Heritage Surprises Committee from Dubai Ports & Customs have also indicated that the preparations towards the Surprises are well underway. The organisers from Art Surprises from the Department of Naturalisation and the Techno Surprises (August 15 to 21), Organising Committee members from Dubai Police are also working in close co-ordination with event organisers to finalise the details of workshops and competitions for flowers, photography, TV broadcasting, Bubble Science etc. 

Back-to-School Surprises committee represented by the Department of Economic Development (DED) is creating a special play called 'Princess Warda and Lazy Aboud' at the Modhesh Fun City amongst other activities. Currently, work is underway to designing stationery that features the DSS Mascot, Modhesh. 

Dubai Summer Surprises 2002 will be held from June 20 to August 30 under the following themes: Food Surprises (June 20 to 26); Water Surprises (June 27 to July 3); Global Surprises (July 4 to 10); Ice Surprises (July 11 to 17); Flower Surprises (July 18 to 24); Sports Surprises (July 25 to 31); Heritage Surprises (August 1 to 7); Art Surprises (August 8 to 14); Techno Surprises (August 15 to 21) and Back to School Surprises (August 22 to 30).
