British Airways and oneworld partner Iberia expand codeshare agreements

4 July 2002

British Airways and its oneworld partner, Iberia, are expanding their current codesharing arrangements, resulting in new international destinations for each carrier.

From July 12, the Iberia code will be added to connecting flights operated by British Airways from London Heathrow to Budapest, Nairobi and Singapore. At the same time, British Airways will add its code to connecting flights operated by Iberia from its main hub in Madrid for travel on to Havana in Cuba and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Michael Jackson, British Airways Head of Alliances and Franchises said: ‘We are pleased to extend our range of codeshares with our oneworld partner, with a package of routes which will offer our passengers more seamless travel options in several new countries. The move reflects the airlines’ on-going commitment to find new opportunities to work together in the interests of all our customers.’

British Airways and Iberia first began codesharing in 1999 with a set of domestic UK and Spanish destinations being added to each other’s networks. This has been followed by four more groups of codeshare expansions, as well as developing sales representation for each other in 27 countries worldwide. Today’s announcement brings the total of codeshare routes to 39. Passengers will be able to earn frequent flyer miles on all of the new routes.

As part of their oneworld co-operation, British Airways and Iberia have also established joint check-in, ticketing, lounges and handling in 24 cities, mostly in Europe and South America.
