RECORD RESPONSE OF OVER 92,000 NOMINATIONS FOR SINGAPORE TOURISM AWARDS 2002

25 June 2002

More than 92,000 nominations have poured in for the Singapore Tourism Board's (STB) Tourism Awards 2002, representing a four-fold increase over 2001.

For the second consecutive year, there has been an increase in foreign nominations. The final tally showed that 27,870 overseas visitors participated in the poll, contributing 30.2 per cent of total nominations. This is a whopping 193 per cent increase over the previous year.

Online nominations also rose, by an encouraging 130 per cent.

These were the results of more intensive publicity by the STB, generating a higher level of awareness among visitors, the industry and the public, of their role in recognising exemplary service providers in the tourism industry. The resounding response also reflects the people's desire to bring service levels in Singapore to even greater heights.

STB's Chief Executive Mr Yeo Khee Leng said: "Creating a service culture is not just about improving the standard of service of the industry - consumers have a part to play too. Like everyone else, the workers in the tourism industry need a pat on their backs when they have performed well. I'm delighted to see the public and the industry all excited about the Tourism Awards this year, the judging teams certainly have a tough job ahead."

Apart from making nomination forms easily accessible at over 1,000 locations across Singapore, online nominations were also encouraged. For the first time, the public could also download the Tourism Awards nomination forms onto their PDAs, for even greater convenience. With these features in place, nominations could literally be made anytime, anywhere.

Following the close of nominations on 31 May will be four intense months of judging. Judges comprising experts from relevant fields of the tourism industry will visit shortlisted establishments and schedule interviews with selected individuals during this time to determine the finalists and winners. Judging criteria focus on service excellence.

The winners will be honoured at the Tourism Awards 2002 Gala Dinner, to be held on 31 Oct 2002 at the Ritz Carlton. His Excellency President S R Nathan and Mrs Nathan will grace the event.

Participants of the nomination exercise stand to win lucky draw prizes worth up to S$4,000 each, if their nominees win the awards in the respective categories. Each prize includes a weekend stay at a luxurious hotel or travel and shopping vouchers, for a fun time in Singapore.

The annual Tourism Awards, organised by the STB, is in its 17th year. The number of categories has grown from seven to 21. Finalists include individuals and organisations in the tourism industry, and journalists.
