29th JAL Scholarship Programme for Asia Pacific university students

1 July 2002

The JAL Foundation will hold the 29th Scholarship program for university undergraduates from 10 countries in the Asia-Pacific region between July 15 and August 15 with 33 participants.

With the 33 students taking part this year, the total of participants since the program started in 1975 is 1,151. Japan Airlines launched the programme in 1975 as an introduction to Japan for university students from the Asia Pacific region. Since 1990 JAL Foundation has arranged the programme, which has evolved in scope over the years.

This year's theme is to "Seek the origins of the attractiveness of Japan" and the programme organizers have invited students who have a keen interest and concern for Japan and Japanese affairs. The organizers hope that the programme will help deepen mutual understanding by examining the effects of Japanese culture on Japan's Asia-pacific neighbours.

The 2002 programme has several elements.

Lecture programme in Understanding Japan

In a 10-day study period in Tokyo, students will learn about Japan's language and culture, history, finance and other areas as well as taking part in field trips to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, broadcasting and media organizations and the National Diet Building.

Kanazawa symposium

In Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture, on the Japan Sea coast participants will join a symposium with local Japanese students. Discussion will focus on the 2002 programme theme, the attractiveness of Japan, through direct experience of traditional arts including tea ceremony and calligraphy.

Student sessions

At Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, sessions will be held with discussions between scholars and local students on this year's theme: "Seek the origins of the attractiveness of Japan"

Symposium, Asia Forum in Kyoto

In a two-day forum, scholars will present their findings from the student sessions and further develop discussion on the programme's theme.

Home stay

Always a popular feature of this programme, home stays with Japanese families in Tokyo and Kanazawa will give participating students a first hand experience of family life in contemporary Japan.

The 29th JAL Scholarship Programme this year has 33 participants from 10 Asia-Pacific countries, including six participants from China and three each from Australia, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
