Huge influx of visitors as Dubai Summer Surprises 2002 starts tomorrow

19 June 2002

Ten weeks of fun, games, competitions and laughter start tomorrow as Dubai Summer Surprises kicks off its fifth year with a whole host of events that will have children everywhere enthralled and amazed, and their parents relieved and amused.

Such has been the interest in this year's Dubai Summer Surprises, the largest yet, that airlines and hotels have experienced an unprecedented increase in the number of bookings for the event. Visitors from the rest of the Middle East have made Dubai their top regional holiday destination, thanks to the publicity of the excellent hotel discounts and the range of activities during DSS 2002 that all the family can enjoy.

Tomorrow at 4:00PM, Dubai Summer Surprises officially starts with events all over the city. At Modhesh Fun City located at the Dubai Airport Expo - East HAll, one of the star attractions, there will be shows and competitions from 4:00 PM until 10:00 PM, while BurJurman shopping mall is the scene for the start of the first theme weeks that will run throughout Dubai Summer Surprises.

Food Surprises, organized by DTCM, will begin at 6:30 PM in BurJurman with an opening ceremony that will hint at all the wonderful food activities children can expect throughout the week.

These include fun-filled events such as the Giant Fruit Trifle on June 21 at the Dragon Castle, General Managers Cake Decorating Competition on June 24 in the Bur Jurman shopping mall and the Smartiesfeuille Day on June 25 in Town Centre shopping mall, among others.

Deira City Centre is celebrating the start of Dubai Summer Surprises with a Modhesh Kid's Carnival at 6:30 PM, while three other fun-filled activities, Inflatables, Lunatrics, and Amazing Creature, all running from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, will have kids and parents captivated, and ready to take part in the DSS spirit.

Adults and children alike can also get the chance to enter exciting raffles whenever they spend Dhs 200 or more at any of the shopping malls that are part of the Dubai Shopping Mall Group. For each Dhs 200 spent, visitors will receive one raffle coupon that could win them Dhs 10,000 a day. On the last day of Dubai Summer Surprises, there will be a grand draw when one lucky winner will walk away with Dhs 1 million.

Even mundane tasks such as filling up the car with petrol can turn into a winner thanks to Emarat's DSS promotions. A key sponsor of the event, Emarat is offering a raffle coupon for every Dhs 20 spent at its stations. Each coupon features a scratch-and-win section offering a huge selection of prizes, and an entry form for the grand prize at the end of DSS when one winner will feel all the richer by Dhs 100,000.

Dubai itself has been decorated with stunning decorations along the streets and malls, highlighting the event and the nine key sponsors who have so generously helped make DSS a reality. Dubai's international airport, in particular, has decked out its terminals with huge decorations and models of the mascot, Modhesh, exciting children as they arrive.

Moreover, the first family to arrive today through the airport for DSS will receive Dhs 10,000 as a welcome gift, as part of the First Families program, where cash gifts are offered every day to one family flying into Dubai for DSS.

Emirates Airlines, one of the key sponsors of DSS, has promoted the event with a huge image of Modhesh on its aircraft, as well as offering special family DSS packages with every ticket bought. Such has been the response that most flights into Dubai, especially from GCC countries, have been fully booked.

Over 60 hotels throughout Dubai are participating in the Fun for Free program, whereby families can book special DSS packages at rates far below the normal rack rates. Families can choose from three, four and five-star hotels, and enjoy such extras as children staying for free, discounts on food and beverage outlets and welcome gifts. Participating hotels are currently enjoying room occupancy rates in excess of 80 percent thanks to DSS, a level unusual for the normally quiet summer months.

DSS 2002 runs from June 20 until August 30.
