VIRGIN BLUE LAUNCHES DIRECT SYDNEY-PERTH FLIGHTS

18 June 2002

Low fares have landed on the Sydney-Perth route with Virgin Blue today beginning non-stop flights between the two capital cities, with fares starting from $249* one way.

The new service is the latest on offer out of Sydney and follows strong demand from both leisure and business Guests wanting a convenient, economical option across the Nullabour.

Virgin Blue has specially configured its brand new 737-800 aircraft to allow extra leg room for the Perth long haul sectors, with a seat pitch between 32 and 33 inches which is comfortably competitive with the opposition.

Virgin Blue will offer a daily direct service, with the launch flight taking off from Sydney's Domestic Express Terminal this morning at 8.55am. The scheduled Perth arrival time of 11.55am caters for business travellers who will land in Perth just in time for their lunch meeting.

Chief Executive Brett Godfrey said, "We know what happens on the routes Virgin Blue doesn't fly and our business travellers have been pushing for a Virgin Blue option on the Sydney-Perth route as it was one of the few key trunk routes still subject to a high priced monopoly."

Perth joins the growing list of destinations Virgin Blue flies to from Sydney including direct services from the New South Wales capital to new destination Coffs Harbour as well as Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Cairns and connecting flights to Darwin, Hobart, Launceston, Mackay and Townsville.

While business travellers will be able to stretch their travel budget further, the Sydney-Perth flights are also expected to boost tourism in New South Wales, with more visitors able to take advantage of low fares and take a holiday or visit friends and family.

The flights will operate out of the Domestic Express Terminal while Virgin Blue continues its negotiations for access to the former Ansett facility in Sydney.

Brett Godfrey continued, "The sooner we are able to finalis fair terms and move in to a larger terminal, the sooner we can offer more flights to the people of New South Wales, not just to Perth but wherever Qantas flies without competition.

Today's launch flight is another big step in making sure more Australian's have the opportunity to take advantage of Virgin Blue's low fares and high quality service on more routes."

* All fares include the passenger ticket levy, airport charges and the global security charge and are for flights booked on the Internet. $10 more by phone.
