Qantas Frequent Flyer donates '71 Spider

18 June 2002

Qantas Frequent Flyer Number 1, Mr Mel Gottlieb, is donating his own 1971 Alfa Romeo Spider as the major prize in a special Qantas promotion to benefit terminally ill children.

Qantas Group General Manager Marketing Curtis Davies said Mr Gottlieb's classic car was one of two Alfa Romeo cars offered as prizes in the promotion.

"When Alfa Romeo learned of Mr Gottlieb's donation, they also wanted to help by adding a new Alfa Romeo Spider to the prize pool," Mr Davies said.

He said proceeds from the promotion would be donated to Bear Cottage, a 10-bed hospice where terminally ill children receive palliative and respite care in a home-like environment, which was an initiative of The Children's Hospital at Westmead.

"Mr Gottlieb's selfless act will help Bear Cottage which relies entirely on the generosity of the community for the $1.5 million needed to run the hospice each year.

"Telstra is also a generous supporter of the promotion," Mr Davies said.

Tickets in the competition cost $10 each and are payable by credit card. Entry is open to Australian residents (except WA residents) over 18 years of age.

Qantas Frequent Flyers can enter as many times as they like by visiting the website qantas.com or calling 1300 880 727 (within Australia only). The promotion closes on 7 August.
