HSBC MEGA HONG KONG SALE UNVEILS FASHION & BEAUTY SHOPPING THEME

18 June 2002

Top models on the catwalk and visitors discovering new fashion looks marked the first theme event of the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale, the longest and largest shopping promotion ever held in the City of Life.

From 15 June until 5 July, the Fashion and Beauty promotion will have visitors and residents flirting with the latest designs and skin care products in Hong Kong.

Officiating at the launch ceremony on 15 June were Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) Executive Director Ms Clara Chong; The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited Head of Marketing, Personal Financial Services, Ms Louisa Cheang and special guest, Mr Michael Wong.

Ms Chong said fashion and beauty is a major shopping category for visitors to Hong Kong and is deservedly the first promotion theme for the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale. "Our statistical review of 2001 shows that five of the top 10 shopping items of visitors fall within this category, with 'ready-made wear' topping the list, highlighting the sheer popularity of these products," she said.

Ms Chong said Hong Kong offers shoppers an enormous range of merchandise. "Hong Kong is recognised for its ready availability of internationally renowned brand names," she said. "The HKTB is making most of this tremendous advantage to reinforce Hong Kong's status as the 'Fashion and Beauty Capital of Asia'," she added.

The launch featured a fashion show of more than 53 ensembles from world-famous Hong Kong brands, which was followed by an innovative make-up and beauty class especially for visitors. Two tourists were invited to have "makeovers" - a free make-up and fashion consultation creating dynamic new images for them.

A series of exciting events and activities will take place during the promotion period, including the HKTB's Hong Kong Fashion Show at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 10 July featuring masterpieces by local designers and free skin care demonstrations and classes by renowned make-up masters.

During the 11-week HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale, participating outlets will provide customers with a range of offers such as a "discount on discount" (an extra discount of at least 5% on discounted items), free gifts upon purchase, or special promotional items.

Creating even more incentive for visitors and residents to spend are special daily and grand lucky draws with prizes totalling more than HK$10 million. Visitors in Hong Kong can obtain their HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale Visitor Privilege Card from the HKTB's Visitor Information and Services Centres and from 13 Visitor Hospitality Kiosks at various shopping malls and department stores around Hong Kong. Shoppers redeem one lucky draw ticket for every HK$300 they spend at Privilege Card outlets.

In the daily lucky draw, a winning visitor will receive two return air-tickets from Cathay Pacific Airways or Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, while Hong Kong residents will receive 15cm gold statuettes, courtesy of 3D-GOLD. At the end of the promotion, visitors and residents have the chance to win in the grand lucky draw 10-carat diamond jewellery worth HK$1 million.

Hong Kong's first fully co-ordinated shopping festival has as its title sponsor The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. The event's Lucky Draw Major Prize Sponsor is 3D-GOLD and the Official Mobile Communicator is Orange. The Official Public Transport is MTR Corporation Limited. The Official Digital Products Sponsor is Samsung Electronics Hong Kong Company Limited and the Official Logistics Company is Oriental Logistics Company Limited. There is a host of other organisations providing attractive prizes.

The HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale is the fourth major programme of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign, organised by the HKTB in co-operation with the Hong Kong SAR Government's Home Affairs Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Tourism Commission, with the support of the 18 District Councils and with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as Principal Sponsor.
