Dragonair's second flight simulator receives green light for operation

Travel News Asia 15 August 2002

A new state-of-the-art A330/340 flight simulator has gone into service at Dragonair's Flight Training Centre next to Hong Kong International Airport following certification by the Civil Aviation Department Hong Kong (HKCAD). It joins an A320 full flight simulator already in use.

"With the operation of the new simulator we will be able to bring all passenger fleet training inhouse for the first time," said Stanley Hui, Dragonair's Chief Executive Officer.

"And we will also be able to offer greater opportunities for airlines around the region to train their pilots here, boosting Hong Kong's position as a centre for excellence in aviation training."

Several airlines have made use of the facilities at Dragonair's Flight Training Centre since it opened in 2000, including Australia's Qantas and TransAsia Airways of Taiwan.

The new simulator can be used for training on either A330 or A340 flight decks after receiving the highest-level D rating from the HKCAD.

"The addition of the new simulator enhances what was already a world-class facility," said Mr. Hui "It will be invaluable in helping the recruits in Dragonair's cadet pilot programme complete their training and in ensuring our pilots meet the highest standards on an ongoing basis."

In addition to the simulator, Dragonair operates a Computer Based Training system for ground subjects, Flight Management and Electronic Centralised Aircraft Monitoring system trainers at its Chek Lap Kok facility. The Flight Training Centre also houses a Cabin Emergency & Evacuation Trainer (CEET) and Door Trainer which provide all safety and emergency training facilities for cabin and flight deck crews for A320, A321 and A330 aircraft types.

Dragonair is a Hong Kong-based airline, operating a fleet of eight A330-300s, four A321s and eight A320s, in addition to two Boeing 747-300 freighters. The airline's passenger network covers 28 destinations across the Asia-Pacific region, while its cargo network connects the markets of Europe, the Middle East, Japan, Taiwan and mainland China.
