14 June 2002

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced that almost 80% of its longhaul Boeing B747 aircraft have now been upgraded with new Economy Class features. Currently 15 of the airline's19 Boeing B747-400 aircraft have been fitted. By the end of this year the aggressive upgrade programme will see all of the 66-aircraft passenger fleet featuring enhanced cushioning in Economy Class seats and a refreshing new cabin styling to complement a spectrum of new onboard entertainment features.

The new features - which are being progressively introduced - include Studiocx inflight entertainment with 20+ channels of video entertainment, inseat power, and inflight email. Every seat already features its own Personal Television, and fresh amenity kits, and a new-look menu were also recently added.

The new look cabin takes a range of colours chosen from the blue spectrum to create calm, and relaxation, and match the existing seat finish and trim. There are two seat fabric colours - one lilac, one green - to create variety between the rows. The seat fabric now features an abstract brushstroke motif in the weave which echoes the Cathay Pacific corporate logo. The interior redesign has even extended to the toilets to create a brighter more spacious feel.

Cathay Pacific Director Service Delivery Robert Cutler said: "This upgrade gives a new look to our Economy Class product, which was already regarded as a market leader. With the Studiocx inflight entertainment product expanding to 20+ channels of movies and comedies and features and Personal Televisions in every seat this is a true twenty-first century product. Add Cathay Pacific's unique service straight from the heart, some great food and refreshments - and we believe we've got a world-beater."

Despite the recent economic climate Cathay Pacific committed to continuing the momentum of product enhancements. With the latest upgrade its Economy Class product has achieved a level of features and sophistication rarely found on rivals.

An typical menu on a longhaul Economy Class flight this month features a starter of Shrimp with Potato salad followed by Braised Fish with Bamboo Shoot and Black Mushrooms with Chinese Mixed Vegetables, or Pan-Fried Chicken Breast with Onion and Shitake Mushroom Sauce, Carrots, Broccoli and Parmentier Potatoes or a vegetarian dish of Shell Pasta with Tomato, Zucchini and Sweet-Corn Sauce. Passengers preferring to dine outside of regular mealtimes on long-haul flights can also help themselves to a good selection of sandwiches, snacks, fruit, instant noodles and drinks from a novel self-service bar.
