12 July 2002

A group of about 2,400 incentive award- winners from Japan arrived here today, making it a record-breaking event from two perspectives: It is the biggest incentive group of its kind, and comprises of about 90% female award-winners, also the largest such group of award-winners to ever visit Thailand.

Due to be here until July 20, 2002, the award winners are all employees of Erina, a Japan-based direct marketing company. JTA (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Is handling the ground arrangements.

Incentive travel is a form of motivation offered to company employees for meeting sales and productivity targets. Many companies find incentive travel a better form of reward than cash handouts.

Erina organises two incentive trips annually for its top-performing staff. Most of its previous trips were to Guam and Hawaii. This is the first time it has brought a group to Thailand.

The group will visit several attractions in Bangkok and Phuket and also go on a one- day trip to Bang Pa-In and Ayutthaya on the luxury train, the Orient Express.

TheTourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Acting Governor and Deputy Governor for Marketing Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan commented, “We are absolutely delighted that Erina has chosen to bring its incentive winners to Thailand. The trip is very much in line with our continuing efforts to position Thailand as a world-class MICE destination and to attract more female visitors.”

Mrs. Juthamas said the trip will showcase Thailand's excellent infrastructure and facilities to host large incentive trips and position as a stable and peaceful destination for international visitors, especially women.

TAT has worked closely with government agencies to ensure that these incentive winners enjoy their nine-day stay.

The Immigration Bureau and Airports Authority of Thailand set up a special counter at Bangkok International Airport to expedite passport formalities. The Tourist Police is providing security in all areas including at Bangkok and Phuket International Airports, Bangkok and Bang Pa-In Railway Stations as well as at the ten hotels in Bangkok and Phuket.

Special parking space for the dozens of tour coaches is being arranged at the airports and railway stations.

Mrs. Juthamas said, “TAT is working hard with all the organisers and government agencies to ensure that the incentive winners have a pleasant stay in Thailand. We hope it will help us attract many more international incentive groups to Thailand and that the winners will themselves recommend Thailand to their families and friends for future holidays.”

In 2001, Japanese visitors to Thailand totalled 1,168,548. Of these, female visitors totalled 430,110. Japan is the largest source of visitor arrivals to Thailand and last year suffered a small drop in arrivals over 2000, largely due to the fallout from the September 11 incident in the US.

The average length of stay of Japanese visitors was 7.12 days and average daily expenditure per person was 3,779.55 baht (or US$85.07), generating about 31.45 billion baht (US$707.77 million baht) in foreign exchange revenue.

Established in Thailand in 1966, JTA (Thailand) is a branch of JTA Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of The JTA Group which operates a vast range of business activities including tour operations, hotel coupons, air tickets and other travel-related services.

With a total of about 450 personnel (as of March 2000) and capital of 610 million Japanese yen, the Group consists of four subsidiary companies with 55 branches world-wide.
