Further World Recognition for Cairns Centre

The Cairns Convention Centre has further confirmed its emerging international status after being ranked fourth in a prestigious global industry survey.

The project is undertaken annually by the Brussels based International Association of Congress Centres (AIPC) which has 124 venue members in 47 countries with this year's results announced recently at their General Assembly in Tenerife.

Independent surveys of up to 30 past national and international clients of each participating venue are collated by the Heilbron University in Germany who then weight and rank performance in 9 separate criteria including building facilities, technical capabilities, project management, catering and quality of hotel and destination services.

The Managing Director of the Cairns Centre Geoff Donaghy said that they had only recently been invited to join AIPC so this was the first time they had been included in the Association's Best Congress Centre research project.

"We were being benchmarked against major international cities who understandably perform far better than Cairns in those destination categories such as airline accessibility and hotel accommodation so to eventually outrank so many of these great centres overall means convention organisers have judged our operational standards as high as any in the world".

"We are the newest centre in probably the smallest destination of all the AIPC membership but 59% of our convention revenue in the past year came from international delegates so this result is a very gratifying endorsement of the global approach we are taking", Mr Donaghy said.

AIPC's number one Congress Centre in 2002 was Vancouver followed by Belfast and Vienna with Cairns Convention Centre in fourth position. Cairns was the highest ranked venue in the Asia Pacific region.

The Cairns Convention Centre was also judged to be in the world's top ten international meetings venues in a survey undertaken last year by Adams Media, North America's leading convention industry publishing company.
