Japan Airlines will be the first airline in Japan to introduce automatic self check-in machines for international passengers at Tokyo's Narita Airport Terminal 2 from November 6.
The JAL self check in machines (SCM) can be used by holders of ATB tickets (Automated Ticket and Boarding pass) and travelers with e-ticket bookings. The machines, which use English and Japanese, are compatible with IATA CUSS standards for international automatic check in (CUSS = Common Use Self-Service). The machines can also register frequent flier miles simultaneously for members of the JAL Mileage Bank FFP and check passport validity.
JAL is installing 10 machines, six in the departure hall of Narita Airport Terminal 2 in the JAL check in area and four in the basement of the terminal, close to the exit from the railway station serving Japan Rail East and Keisei Railways.
To use the machines, passengers should have ATB tickets or e-tickets, machine-readable passports and only hand luggage. Initially, use of the new machines by e-ticket holders is limited to JAL Mileage Bank members.
Passengers can select their seats through the SCM but this is not necessary if advance seat selection has already been made at the time of reservation.
After the check in process is complete, the SCM either dispenses the ATB, printed with the selected flight and seat number or, in the case of an e-ticket reservation, a boarding card containing the flight and seat number and other passenger data.
Initially, JAL ground staff will be on duty by the machines to help passengers use the new equipment.
Passengers can use the SCM machines for checking in for JAL, Japan Asia Airways and JALways' flights, except on routes to Canada, Australia, the United States (including routes to Guam and Brazil) and Mexico, because of immigration requirements of those governments. Use of SCM check in may not apply to some code share flights. |
