Delta Advises Customers on New Airport and Airline Security Measures

Travel News Asia Date: 9 October 2001

New Rules Limit Customers To One Carry-On Bag and Personal Item Per Flight

Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) announced today that in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements, customers will now be limited to one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a briefcase, laptop computer or purse, on all Delta and Delta Connection flights effective immediately.

Delta continues to work closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other government agencies on matters related to security and safety. Delta offers the following tips to assist customers:

Check-in/At The Gate:

Customers should arrive at the airport at least two hours before their departure time.

Bring a government-issued ID (federal, state or local) and one of the following documents: electronic ticket receipt, delta.com or travel agency itinerary, Delta itinerary card, boarding document, or a paper ticket. If you do not have any of the travel documents listed above, you must go to the ticket counter.

Customers may be asked to show the ID at check-in and at subsequent points, along with their boarding passes. Customers and their bags may also be subjected to additional screening at subsequent checkpoints.

Automated check-in kiosks are available for Delta SkyMiles customers at selected locations.

Screener checkpoints:

Only ticketed customers are allowed beyond the screener checkpoints, except for those with specific medical or parental needs.

All electronic items, such as laptops and cell phones, may be subject to additional screening.

Limit metal objects worn on person. Customers should remove all metal objects prior to passing through the metal detectors to facilitate the screening process.

Items prohibited from aircraft cabins (these items must be placed in, or transported as, checked baggage or risk confiscation):

Knives, cutting instruments, including carpet knives and box cutters (and spare blades).

Any device with a folding or retractable blade, straight razors, metal scissors and nail files.

Certain sporting equipment, including baseball/softball bats, golf clubs, pool cues, ski poles and hockey sticks.

Items permitted in aircraft cabins:

Walking canes and umbrellas (following inspection to ensure prohibited items are not concealed)

Certain personal hygiene items, including nail clippers, safety razors (including disposable razors), syringes (with documented proof of medical need), tweezers and eye lash curlers.

Delta customers are also reminded to control all bags and personal items, not bring anything onboard for another person and report any unattended items in the airport or aircraft to the nearest airport or Delta representative. Delta appreciates the patience of our customers, employees, airport officials and contract partners as we work through these enhanced processes in an effort to strengthen security for the traveling public.
