New Orleans Airport to be named after Jazz Legend

Travel News Asia Date: 9 July 2001

Starting August 2, New Orleans airport will go by the name of one of the city' most famous native sons -- jazz legend Louis Armstrong.

The city council voted unanimously last week to modify the airport's name to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport to honor the trumpeter known worldwide as "Satchmo."

The name change will take place two days before what would have been Armstrong's 100th birthday. He died in 1971 at age 69.
