TWO NEW KLM FLIGHTS TO JOHANNESBURG

Travel News Asia Date: 8 June 2001

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will begin operating two new weekly roundtrip flights between Amsterdam and Johannesburg as of November 29. These flights will supplement the existing daily roundtrips on the Amsterdam-Johannesburg-Cape Town route, bringing the total number of nonstop weekly roundtrips between Amsterdam and Johannesburg to nine. The seven existing flights are operated by Boeing 747-400s in full-passenger configuration. The two new flights will be operated by Boeing 747-400 Combis with a partitioned maindeck, carrying passengers fore and cargo aft.

The two new roundtrips will be operated on Thursdays and Saturdays under flight number KL 591/592. KL 591 will leave Amsterdam at 10:00 and arrive in Johannesburg at 21:45 local time. The return flight, KL 592, will leave Johannesburg at 23:45 local time, arriving at Schiphol the following morning at 09:40.

KLM passengers departing from Schiphol can now choose between a morning and an evening flight to Johannesburg on Thursdays and Saturdays. The two new flights also offer excellent connections with flights to and from North America. KLM decided to add the two new flights because the Amsterdam-Johannesburg service is in great demand. KLM hopes to further extend the number of flights to South Africa in future.

The two new flights to Johannesburg also reflect KLMs strategy to continually assess all routes and flight frequencies on the basis of their profitability and network significance. This implies that capacity is sometimes transferred from low-yield routes to those that are more profitable.
