Delta SkyWish Accepts Miles for Earthquake Relief in El Salvador; Miles Donated to CARE and United Way Will Benefit Earthquake Victims

Travel News Asia Date: 30 January 2001

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) has announced that all miles donated to CARE and United Way International (UWI) between now and Feb. 28, 2001, via SkyWish(TM) will go to earthquake relief efforts in El Salvador. SkyWish is the Delta program that enables SkyMiles(R) members to donate their miles to charity.

Donations can be made in 5,000-mile increments with a 5,000-mile minimum. Delta will increase each donation by adding 1,000 miles for every 5,000 miles contributed.

The earthquake, which occurred on Jan. 14 and measured a magnitude of 7.6, left a scene of destruction throughout El Salvador. Over 650 people have died and more than 2,500 have been injured. El Salvador is one of Delta's Latin America destinations with flights to El Salvador leaving Atlanta daily.

Miles donated to UWI will help earthquake victims get to the United States for medical care not available in El Salvador. UWI will also fly qualified relief workers and community builders to El Salvador to provide assistance.

"UWI has been able to change lives and to save lives with Delta's generous matching program," said Robert Beggan, president and CEO of UWI. "UWI is proud to partner with Delta and to be able to offer this option in medical assistance internationally."

Miles donated to CARE will send relief workers in and out of El Salvador to provide services and supplies. CARE is working to provide food, shelter and other comforts to residents.

"The destruction from this earthquake, coming just two years after Hurricane Mitch, is a crushing setback for El Salvador. CARE is committed to working with the people of El Salvador to rebuild their lives," said Peter Bell, president of CARE.

"We are very grateful for all the support Delta Air Lines provides us year round, but especially in times of such devastating emergencies."

SkyWish accepts miles for five base charities: CARE, Make-A-Wish, Make-A- Wish International, The United Way of America and United Way International, as well as one charity that changes each quarter. SkyWish donations are not tax deductible for Delta Air Lines or SkyMiles members. To donate miles, SkyMiles members have the following options:
