The Westin Plaza Singapore to be renamed Raffles The Plaza

Travel News Asia Date: 26 September 2001

Raffles International Hotels & Resorts will rebrand and rename The Westin Plaza when it assumes its management on 1 January 2002.

The 800-room hotel, one of the landmark hotels in Raffles City, will be renamed Raffles The Plaza. The hotel will be marketed under Raffles International’s Raffles tier of hotels, which caters to affluent business and leisure travellers who require something more than mere five-star accommodation.

“As Westin Plaza has been repositioned as a five star premium property, it fits well into our Raffles tier of hotels,” said Richard Helfer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Raffles International Hotels & Resorts. “These hotels offer a level of service and elegance that is instantly recognised as a hallmark of the Raffles brand.

"Other hotels and resorts in the Raffles tier include Raffles Hotel, Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, Brown’s Hotel, Raffles L’Ermitage Beverly Hills, Hotel Le Royal, Le Montreux Palace and Grand Hotel d’Angkor.”

In addition to the luxury Raffles tier of hotels, Raffles International also markets its portfolio of hotels and resorts under a deluxe tier, which includes Swissotel and Merchant Court brands. These brands cater to the needs of modern business as well as leisure travellers, with an emphasis on quality and comfort.

The soon-to-be Raffles The Plaza has undergone a S$45million renovation of guestrooms, Executive Club Lounge and Lobby. Redesigned with an Asian theme, while accentuating the international flavour of Singapore, the hotel offers the innovative “hotel within a hotel” concept which features personalization of the guest stay to the nth degree. With many available choices in guestroom types, such as Premier Deluxe, Premier Grand, Premier Executive Club, Plaza View Suites and Penthouse Suites, as well as personalised service and other elite amenities, the guest’s luxury experience is limitless.

Another feature of Raffles The Plaza is its award-winning guestroom design, and in 2000, the hotel was recognised by the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show, sponsored by Hospitality Design and Lodging Magazine, with the 2000 Gold Key Award in the “guestroom” design category. This Award honours excellence in hospitality design.

Like its guestroom design, the guestroom corridors and elevator lobbies of the hotel, have been given a look and feel of a luxury residence. The Executive Club Lounge has been upgraded to accommodate up to 80 guests and includes a boardroom and open-air terrace. Established to meet the demands of today’s health conscious business traveller, a state-of-the-art Executive Club Gymnasium offers cardio vascular equipment, exercise machines and free-weights. In addition guests have access to Raffles International’s Amrita Spa, the largest spa facility in Asia offering the best in spa and fitness services, located over three floors of the hotel.

The main lobby has been reconceptualised and redesigned in such a way that its water features have been raised in the lobby and at the hotel entrance, to provide a sensual yet sophisticated environment. To complement the tranquil atmosphere, the hotel’s renowned collection of modern Western and Asian art, which includes works by a variety of both established and new Asian and other internationally recognised artists are highlighted and expanded in both the guestrooms and public areas. The hotel entrance, main lobby and lift areas feature natural finishes and a combination of natural and soft lighting in the main entrance to emphasize the modern architecture.

In June this year, Raffles International announced that the other landmark hotel in Raffles City and South East Asia’s tallest hotel, currently known as the Westin Stamford will be renamed Swissotel Singapore, The Stamford when Raffles International assumes management of the hotel, as well, on 1 January 2002.
