3,000-KILOGRAM GIANT SPONGE CAKE TO BE DISTRIBUTED FREE TO VISITORS AT SHINDAGHA HERITAGE SITES TODAY

Travel News Asia Date: 17 December 2001

A gigantic 30 square meter cake weighing in excess of a phenomenal 3,000 kilograms awaits visitors to the Shindagha heritage sites today (December 17th) as part of the National Day/Eid celebrations lined up by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

The mammoth sponge cake is being prepared by the Jumeirah International Group to mark the UAE's 30th National Day celebrations that were deferred and combined with the Eid festivities.

"The cake will be given the ceremonial cut tomorrow evening and will be distributed to visitors to the Shindagha heritage sites free in celebration of the national spirit," said DTCM Manager Heritage sites and Events, Awadh Al Seghayer.

Mr. Seghayer noted that good food is a dominant force in attracting visitors to any destination.

"This National Day cake provides a distinctive example of the effective partnership that exists between the public and private sector in Dubai and is a manifestation of the multinational spirit of the emirate, which teems with a variety of cuisine," said Mr. Seghayer.

More than 30 chefs have been working for almost 3,000 hours to prepare this colossal cake that will measure ten meters by three meters and will have a scaled down edible version of the Burj Al Arab measuring three meters high as its central feature. As many as 3,300 fairy lights will be used to decorate the cake.
