Hong Kong’s First Authentic New York Style Deli Opens at the Great Eagle Hotel

Travel News Asia Date: 17 April 2001

Hong Kong's first authentic New York-style deli, Main Street Deli has opened at the Great Eagle Hotel. Inspired by New York’s famous 2nd Avenue Deli, Main Street Deli now makes it possible for visitors and Hong Kong residents to enjoy traditional New York deli favourites, such as pastrami on rye, hot corned beef, brisket, gefilte fish, bagels, blintzes and chicken soup with matzo balls.

The 2nd Avenue Deli has been an institution in New York for nearly half a century, and is the most famous example of the traditional neighborhood deli which was imported into the US by Jewish immigrants. Portions are large and hearty and focus on the freshest simple ingredients.

The Great Eagle’s Executive Chef Alan Yu trained in New York with Jack Lebewohl, the owner of 2nd Avenue Deli, so that his creations will satisfy the most discerning New Yorkers. Jack Lebewohl himself will come to Hong Kong for the grand opening of Main Street Deli in mid-May.

The Deli is located just off the Main Lobby of The Great Eagle Hotel and has separate street access which recreates the warm “neighbourhood” ambience of the Lower East Side of New York with which deli food is associated.

Menu items include traditional starters such as Chopped Veal Liver served with Rye Bread ($78), Gefilte Fish, poached and served with a warm Beetroot Horseradish ($78) and Original Matzoh Ball Soup flavoured with Carrot and Dill ($48).

Choicest cooked meats are an important part of deli food, and so the Main Street Deli offers an extensive selection of favourite deli platters, all served with crisp fresh Garden Greens and a generous helping of Idaho Potato salad in a specially created “secret” House Dressing.

Other items include a wide choice of eggs and omelettes including Baron Herzog’s Original 10-Egg Omelette ($138), a huge selection of fresh salads and New York style pizzas and pastas. For those with hearty appetites, there are deli-style entrees such as Crumbed Prime Veal Cutlet with a Dutch Fava Bean Mash ($178), Grandma’s Meat Loaf smothered in Gravy with dollops of Idaho Mash ($138) and Minced Beef Braised Stuffed Cabbage with Steamed Australian Rice ($148).

Sandwiches are of course an extremely important deli menu component and these are combined with a variety of the best quality freshly baked breads from the hotel’s own bakery oven: French bread, white bread, Rye, toast, sour dough, multi-grain, oatmeal or of course the traditional bagel.

The specialty of the house which is one of the classics of the 2nd Avenue Deli is The Original Reuben – a juicy combination of Pastrami, Corned Beef, Turkey and Melted Swiss Cheese on Grilled Rye Bread with Sauerkraut and Russian Dressing ($98).

Hot deli sandwiches such as the Foot Long Hot Dog garnished with Sauerkraut and Sweet Pickled Relish and Pulled Chicken with Red Hook Barbecue Sauce on Rye Bread all come served with salad and Home Made Giant Idaho Fries.

Since all deli portions are seriously oversized, the Main Street Deli has its own special “doggy bag” so that guests can take away what they can’t finish. The deli also offers takeaway service and opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

The Great Eagle Hotel, Hong Kong’s finest independent five star hotel, is centrally located in the heart of the lively Tsimshatsui commercial district of Kowloon. The Hotel offers an elegant European style and opulence with a contemporary twist and is rapidly becoming the preferred choice for discerning travellers from the fashion and entertainment industries.
