SHANGRI-LA'S TANJUNG ARU RESORT RECOGNISED AS THE MOST OUTSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY ORGANISATION

Travel News Asia Date: 10 August 2001

After just eight months of being certified MS ISO 14001 compliant, Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort has now been recognised as the Most Environmental Friendly Organisation in Sabah, Malaysia.

The Environmental Award 2001 was presented to the Resort by the Datuk Chong Kah Kiat, Chief Minister of Sabah-cum-Minister of Tourism Development, Environment, Science and Technology.

Environmental Action Committee (EAC) organiser of the Environmental Award 2001 said that the award was the first of its kind in Sabah to recognise individuals and organisations for their outstanding contribution towards environmental protection and conservation.

Sabah Environmental Action Committee, a smart partnership between the Government and the people, is initiated and managed by the Ministry of Tourism Development, Environment, Science and Technology.

The Most Outstanding Environmental Friendly Organisation award is presented to an organisation for the outstanding vision in the planning, management, practice, implementation and operation of its business towards reducing impact on the environment.

Mr. Arbind K. Shrestha, General Manager of the Resort, upon receiving the award, congratulated and thanked the Resort's Environmental Management Committee for their hard work and contribution in making this award possible. He also thanked Kota Kinabalu City Hall for their trust and confidence by nominating the Resort for this award.

He attributed the success to the effort by all the 620 employees of the Resort and their commitment towards continual improvement of its Environmental Management System to ensure environmental conservation and protection.

He further stressed that the Resort has always been environmental-friendly and only recently officially documented its effort through the ISO 14001 certification in November last year.

Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort, Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort and Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club became the first organisations in Sabah to be accorded MS ISO 14001 certification. This certification recognises the Resorts' success in fully implementing the Environmental Management System and its efforts towards continuous environmental improvement.
