SHANGRI-LA'S GOLDEN SANDS RESORT, PENANG COMPLETES RM21 MILLION UPGRADE OF ALL 395 ROOMS AND SUITES

Travel News Asia Date: 10 August 2001

Shangri-La's Golden Sands Resort, Penang is proud to announce the completion of its guestrooms renovation programme. Costing well over RM21 (approximately US$6) million, all 395 rooms and suites have been completely refurbished. This is the most extensive room renovation programme since its opening in 1979.

The resort, nestled along the popular Batu Feringgi beach, commenced with the first phase of the renovation project in October 2000, consisting of two floors, which was completed at the end of 2000.

Phase two, which included the remaining five floors, commenced in February and was completed on schedule at the end of June 2001.

The rooms and suites have been entirely remodeled, with a fresh, new image. Tastefully designed with a touch of elegance, the rooms now have a contemporary feel reflecting the mood of larger space and enhanced comfort.

Though modern in design, the rooms are bright and cheerful, complemented by sleek, functional nyatoh wood furniture.

All guestrooms offer a full range of modern amenities including TV (offering thirteen channels, including the all-movie HBO channel), IDD telephone, mini-bar (Deluxe Seaview and Executive Suites only), refrigerator, tea and coffee making facilities, in-room safe and hairdryer.

Commenting on a significantly enhanced product, Mr Bernhard Haechler, Area Manager and General Manager said, "We are confident that the renovated rooms will herald a new level of accommodation and service that people have come to expect of Shangri-La. The new rooms are a wonderful improvement and offer an exciting, more competitive product for the future".

Shangri-La's Golden Sands Resort is part of the Hong Kong based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Asia's largest luxury hotel company, which manages 38 hotels and resorts in 10 countries in Asia: China, Hong Kong SAR, Fiji, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, representing a room inventory of 19,500.
