Coco Palm Resort & Spa in the Maldives provides true Maldivian Experience

Travel News Asia 22 December 2004

The Coco Palm Resort & Spa in the Maldives is offering guests the chance to experience the real Maldivian way of life first hand. It is possible to spend an evening with a local family, a day with a local fisherman, enjoy a cooking lesson with the resorts chef or a consultation with the local medicine man, in order to gain a taste of the real Maldives.

The luxury resort can arrange for guests to spend an evening in a Maldivian home, becoming part of a local family and joining them for home made tea and short eats. Guests can enjoy sightseeing, shopping and various daily activities, before returning home to help prepare the evening meal and enjoy the traditional but exquisite Maldivian cuisine. Finally, guests join in the familys regular evening walk before bidding farewell and returning to the resort.

The price is US$70 per couple and includes evening tea, a typical Maldivian Dinner and 2 bottles of water.

Another possibility is to spend a day with a local fisherman, joining him in using the traditional Maldivian Pole and Line method. At the start of the day fishermen take out their dhoni, a traditional Maldivian fishing boat, in search of live bait such as small scads, silver side and sardine. With the bait on board, the group then head out to the open sea in search of schools of tuna and a successful catch.

The price is US$45 per person and includes breakfast, 2 bottles of water and 2 soft drinks.

At the resort, guests can enjoy a cooking lesson with the resorts chef in the kitchens. Using local produce such as melons, passion fruit, sweet corn, banana and lemon grass from the hotels own organic garden, guests are invited to create Maldivian cuisine under the watchful eye of an expert in the field.

The price is US$30 per person for the cookery lesson and includes the prepared meal.

Additionally, guests staying at Coco Palm Resort & Spa can learn how the islands indigenous plants can be used to cure aches and pains, such as high blood pressure, arthritis and cholesterol, during a free of charge consultation with the local Medicine Man. Ahmed Mohamed is 52 years old and extremely well known and respected locally. Visiting the resort every Friday, he can prescribe remedies for skin infections, disorders of joints, aches and pains, nausea & vomiting, diarrhea and a number of allergies.

Whilst at the resort, guests can follow nature trails through the lush vegetation on the island and see the medicinal herbs growing in their natural environment. Little wooden signs along the trail identify the indigenous plants by their local name, common name and scientific names. Coco Palm has also produced a plant directory which provides information on the plants and their local traditional medicinal values which guests can refer to during their stay.
