Dubai Ice Rink launches Broomball for Corporate Team-Building

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Tuesday, 31 August 2010

The Dubai Ice Rink has launched a new sport for special corporate days out - Broomball.

The game, very similar to ice hockey in formation and rules but incorporating some soccer strategies, is a popular winter sport in the US and Canada, and has made its entry into the region at Dubai Ice Rink.

The latest addition to an array of ice rink events including ‘Disco on Ice’, Broomball does not require ice skates to play the game. Players only have to wear special straps - provided by Dubai Ice Rink - on to their own sneakers, thereby making it particularly appealing to those who are anxious or do not know how to ice skate but still want to comfortably enjoy the game on ice.

Broomball players have to tackle the ball that must be netted in the opponent team’s goal post using special ‘brooms’ – sticks made of aluminum with a moulded plastic broom-shaped head. Each game consists of two halves and the goals are the standard ice hockey nets.

Dubai Ice Rink is offering special corporate packages for one-hour broomball sessions aimed at team-building. The game is a non-contact sport and is played with the formation of two teams consisting of six players on each side.

Faris Juma, General Manager, Dubai Ice Rink, said, “Broomball was first played in Canada in the early 1900s and later developed further in the United States. By introducing it to Dubai Ice Rink, we are offering an extended bouquet of services for our visitors who want to enjoy the experience even if they are concerned about ice-skating. The game is ideal for corporates as a team-building exercise that can be conducted safely but with unparalleled fun.”

The exclusive use of the ice rink will be for three games that are 20 minutes long.

The Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink also serves as a venue for birthday parties, and serves as a multi-purpose venue for private functions and corporate events.
