Finnair launches Business Class Upgrades by SMS

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Friday, 16 October 2009

Finnair Plus customers can now upgrade to business class via a text message. When a customer's mobile phone beeps 24 hours before the departure of a Finnair scheduled flight, the message might contain an offer to use points for an upgrade in travel class. Frequent flyers are being offered this option when business class seats are available.

“The new service is an easy and simple way to use accumulated Finnair Plus points or a travel class upgrade award. Like check-in text messages, the messages should be answered with one letter, in this case 'U' as in upgrade,” said Anna Korpi, who is responsible for Finnair Plus marketing.

Customers' chances of receiving such a message depends, among other things, on the booking class of the ticket they bought. Before sending the message, a check is also made that the customer has sufficient Finnair Plus points, or points that are soon to expire, or an available travel class upgrade award, which are needed to redeem the seat. The service is flight-specific.

The new service will initially apply to scheduled flights departing from Helsinki, but in future seats will also be offered on flights departing from other locations.

The upgrade flights will accumulate Finnair Plus points according to the original booking class and the points deducted for the travel class upgrade will be slightly less than normal.
