The
Sheraton Towers Singapore Hotel has been conferred the Work-Life Excellence Award by the Tripartite Committee on Work-Life Strategy, a
committee set up in September 2000 to drive the promotion of Work-Life Harmony. This is the second time
the hotel has been recognized for its efforts in improving work-life balance; in 2006,
the hotel won the Work-Life Achiever Award.
The biennial Work-Life Excellence Award recognises organisations that are committed to helping employees harmonise work and personal
needs. It focuses on the benefits that a Work-Life strategy gives an organisation, rather than just the number and variety of Work-Life projects
initiated.
According to Sheraton Tower’s General Manager, Mr Steven Long, “We believe our associates’ overall well-being plays an important part in
enabling the hotel to achieve its business success. In order to help our associates accomplish a balance work life, we have introduced a
Work-Life Excellence framework. Since the launch of this framework, we have seen a tremendous improvement in associates’ health and
productivity. More importantly, our associates are not only healthier but happier.”
The Work-Life Excellence framework comprises a spectrum of programmes that promote healthy eating and balanced living through sports,
health-screening, monitoring healthy food choices, family-friendly activities.
One key work-life programme is
“Sheraton Sparkies” that promotes healthy living through sports activities. The committee comprises of
representatives from each division within the hotel: rooms, food &
beverage, administration and general, sales and marketing and supported by
the human resources division. The committee’s tagline is “Make Fitness Fun”, underpinning the idea that sports is a fun way to stay healthy.
In addition,
the hotel also encourages staff and their families to participate in activities such as Movie Day and community outreach
programmes. Associates also enjoy special rates when they stay at
Starwood properties overseas; this benefit is extended to their immediate
family members.
With such programmes in place,
the hotel says it has seen encouraging improvement in terms of health and morale amongst
staff. There was an
increase of perfect attendance award recipients from 117 in 2006 to 126 in 2007. Days spent on medical leave
also dropped significantly.
