Get Wet in South Australia

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Wednesday, 16 January  2008

South Australia has long been a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts. With beautiful beaches from Adelaide to the Limestone Coast, crystal clear turquoise waters, magnificent reefs and thrilling scuba diving, there’s no end to the fun things that can be done in the water.

River Fun: The Riverland is an ideal spot to enjoy a number of water sports. Experience the thrill of water-skiing, bare-footing, knee-boarding, wake-boarding or tubing. Canoes or kayaks can also be hired from Riverland Leisure Canoe Tours or some local caravan parks and houseboat operators.

Hell Rider: Carve up the waters in Helava Jet Boat. Strap yourself in and prepare for a 20 minute off-shore thrill in the beautiful Holdfast Shores Marina in Glenelg. A series of breath-taking maneuvers and up to three to five metre waves will get you airborne and they can also stop this heavy beast at top speed in 10 metres, forcing the bow of the boat to be submerged into the water, with a wave crashing over the whole boat.

Shark Diving: You’ve seen the movie. Now see him up, close and personal. Sign up for a cage dive with tour operator Calypso Star Charters in Port Lincoln in the Eyre Peninsula. Guests arrive at Port Lincoln and check in at the Lincoln Cove Marina, a waterfront accommodation, just metres from the Calypso berth. Shark divers will depart from there on the boat cruise through Boston Bay before arriving on the Neptune group of islands. The Calypso Star Charter operates shark cage diving adventures to the Neptune islands from one to four days.

Flippin’ Fun: For a gentler experience, you can experience what it is like swimming with dolphins when you sign up with Temptation Sailing. Temptation is one of the first vessels in South Australia to be given a dolphin swim license and can help you get up close to these friendly and curious creatures.

Be Cool: Interested in learning how to surf the waves? The South Coast Surf Academy offers all visitors a chance to do so in an educational, active, adventurous environment. Lessons are conducted on the beautiful South Coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula at Surfer’s Parade, Middleton. The academy provides all that you need - full-length Quicksilver/Roxy wetsuits, soft Malibu surfboards, and in and out of the water instructions from friendly, accredited male and female instructors. During the four hour lesson, which includes a lunch break, the pros will teach you about ocean awareness, surf safety, and board handling.

Tuna, Anyone?: Adventure Bay Charters run daily tours to their purpose built commercial Tuna Farm, where you can swim with Bluefin tuna. There are also tours to swim and interact with Australian Sealions – often referred to as the "puppy dogs of the sea". This family owned business is run by experienced, professional guides providing a great insight into the local area, marine life and fishing industry.
