SriLankan Airlines launches Sydney-Bangkok code share with Emirates

Travel News Asia 28 July 2005

SriLankan Airlines is now operating daily code share flights with Emirates from Sydney to Bangkok, from where passengers can join SriLankan's own flights to Colombo.

The airline also offers daily code shares with Emirates from Melbourne and Brisbane to Singapore.

The new code share services with Emirates - a major shareholder in and strategic partner to SriLankan - are part of a broader strengthening of the relationship, which this week has also led to 10 new weekly code share flights from Colombo to Cyprus.

At the same time, SriLankan continues to expand its own network, having just launched three weekly services to the Chinese capital, Beijing. With the addition of these destinations, SriLankan Airlines will provide services to 48 destinations in 27 countries.

“SriLankan is constantly searching for ways by which to increase services and the scope of our network," said Barry Brown, Head of Commercial for SriLankan Airlines. “This is a highly profitable strategy for us and raises our profile and marketing opportunities. It gives us a definite competitive edge at a time when the global airline industry is in crisis over skyrocketing fuel prices.”

SriLankan currently has codeshare agreements with Emirates, Malaysia Airlines, Indian Airlines, Oman Air, and bmi. In turn, these airlines use SriLankan’s flights to extend their own networks.

In addition to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, SriLankan also code shares on Emirates to Dubai (18 times a week), Düsseldorf (7), Frankfurt (14), Munich (14), Singapore (4), Jakarta (4), New York (7), Paris (12), Zurich (7), Male (11), Birmingham (14), Manchester (14), Muscat (3), London Gatwick (14), Glasgow (7), and Bahrain (14).
