31 square metre, 3,100 kilogrammes cake to be distributed free at Shindagha

Travel News Asia 5 December 2002

A colossal 31 square meter sponge cake, weighing a consummate 3100 kilograms, will be distributed to the walk in visitors at the Shindagha heritage sites tomorrow  December 6th, as part of the 31st National Day and Eid celebrations lined up by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

The mammoth sponge cake is being prepared by the Jumeirah International Group to mark the UAE’s 31st National Day celebrations.

“This giant cake is unique in every sense because practically all the ingredients are in multiples of 31 from the gross weight (3100 kilograms) to 310 liters of egg to 310 kilograms of sugar and so on,” said DTCM Deputy Manager Events, Marwan Juma bin Beyat.

He noted that the cake would be given the ceremonial cut this evening and will be distributed to visitors at the Shindagha promenade just outside Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House in celebration of the national spirit.

“It will take 31 chefs exactly 3,100 man hours to prepare this enormous feast that will measure approximately twelve meters by three meters and will have a scaled down edible version of the Burj Al Arab measuring 3.1 meters in height as its central feature with the total surface area of the cake measuring precisely 31 meters,” said John Wood, Executive Chef of Burj Al Arab.

Hectic preparations are currently on in the kitchens of Burj Al Arab as pastry chefs and their assistants toil to create this giant cake.

The 30th National day cake was extremely popular last year and was devoured in less than an hour by enthusiastic holiday crowds.

“The staging of this event provides a distinctive example of the effective partnership that exists between the public and private sector in Dubai and is an expression of the cosmopolitan spirit of the emirate, which teems with a variety of cuisine,” concluded Mr. bin Beyat.
