Kowloon Shangri-La opens Tapas Bar

Travel News Asia 3 December 2002

The Kowloon Shangri-La (Hong Kong) has opened Tapas Bar, a brand new wine bar on the lobby level of the hotel. This trendy and upbeat meeting place with an informal yet sophisticated ambience recently opened its doors, with an unparalleled matching of “New World wines and international tapas”.

With a 100% New World wine list including 130 wine selections from nine countries, Tapas Bar is a venue for budding wine lovers to veteran wine connoisseurs. Over 18 white and 18 red wines will be available by the glass at great value for money, allowing guests to taste a variety of New World wines from differing grapes, soils and vineyards. The wine list also features two innovative sections: “Wine Not?” – highlighting unique or newly released wines, and “Wine More?” – a selection of high quality and rare New World wines. Wines will be served in Vinum Extreme wine glasses, the evolutionary 21st century glass collection by Riedel named for their extreme contours and diamond-shaped bowls, and ideal for enjoying the aromas and taste of New World wines.

Borrowing the Spanish concept of many small dishes shared over many courses and incorporating cuisine from around the globe, Tapas Bar introduces a delicious menu of international tapas, expertly produced by the chefs in the open kitchen, for the first time in a hotel in Hong Kong. The array of tasty dishes have been specifically chosen to complement the New World wines and a Tandoori oven ensuring freshly baked breads. To further enhance and authenticate the international cuisine, the chinaware is in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes, and has been collected from around the globe. “Lunch Quickies” include three, four or five tapas and a “softie” (soft drink) for great value lunch meals.

Tapas Bar introduces the Spork to the Hong Kong dining scene – a stainless steel spoon and fork combination that allows easy nibbling from the shared tapas plates, highlighting the Tapas Bar’s wining and dining philosophy.

Tapas Bar’s contemporary décor and furnishings include two full-length limestone framed wine racks holding 400 bottles, backlit honey-coloured onyx counters and wall features, a backlit frosted glass wine bar with stools, a social table for meeting and mingling, a tapas counter facing the open kitchen with a tempting food display, window seats with views of Hong Kong Island and intimate table dining.

Tapas Bar is open for lunch from 12:00 to 2:30 pm, and evening drinks and dinner from 5:00 pm until 1:00 am, with last food orders at 11:30 pm.
