Qantas Arrangements During Temporary Closure of Broome Airport (Australia)

Travel News Asia 30 September 2002

Qantas announced today it would operate an amended schedule to Derby/Curtin with bus transfers to Broome while the Broome International Airport is closed.

Regional General Manager Western Australia Ian Gay said the Broome International Airport Group had advised Qantas it would close the airport for up to 12 days from Monday 11 November for major repair works to the runway.

"With the temporary closure of Broome Airport, we are working hard to finalise an interim schedule which will allow us to continue services to the region for the duration of the closure," Mr Gay said.

"Broome is an important part of our network for leisure and regional business travel."

Qantas operates 28 return services each week to Broome from Perth and Alice Springs using a mix of BAe146 and Boeing 737 aircraft.

Mr Gay said Qantas is expected to operate two return BAe146 services each day between Perth and Derby/Curtin while Broome Airport is closed. Bus transfers will be provided for the two and a half hour trip between Derby/Curtin and Broome.

"We are speaking to Broome International Airport Group about the facilities they will provide within the former Ansett terminal at Derby/Curtin and we hope to finalise our interim operations very soon," Mr Gay said.
