Executive Chairman from the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism expresses extreme gratitude for full international community support of terror victims

Travel News Asia 14 October 2002

Setyanto Santosa, Executive Chairman from the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, offered Indonesia’s extreme gratitude today for the overwhelming show of support from the local and international community to help the victims of terror. The Australian government in collaboration with the Indonesian government has very quickly responded to this emergency by mobilizing medical supplies and professional staff flown in by specially chartered airlines.

Said Setyanto Santosa: "Bali is a safe haven and is an island recognized internationally for being a sanctuary of tranquility. Last Saturday evening Bali peace was assaulted by an unthinkable massacre where approximately 181 people have been killed and hundreds of others injured. The Balinese people have never experienced an event of this scale and did not have the capacity to deal with casualties of this nature or of this number. We are extremely grateful for the assistance and the support coming from across Indonesia, and across the world, to help all the innocent victims."

Added Setyanto Santosa: "These horrendous acts go against the innate nonviolent nature of the Balinese people. Nearly 48 hours after the act of terror we are witnessing the tremendous and collective community resolve across Bali to survive this cruel assault with their confidence in the power of peace intact."

One part of the healing process is to identify the murderers behind this massacre. Police are conducting intensive round the clock investigations.

Meanwhile the eyes and prayers of the world are now focused on wounded of this horrendous tragedy. With the tremendous efforts of the Australian government, local and international community many of the wounded who were initially treated in local hospitals were flown to medical treatment centers in Australia.

The joint efforts of the Indonesian and the Australian government have mobilized teams of forensic experts, bomb experts, medical supplies and evacuation facilities.
