Delta Air Lines To Start New Routes To Japan -- Carrier Plans To Fly From New York To Tokyo; Los Angeles To Nagoya

Travel News Asia Date: 7 September 2000

Flights from Portland, Ore., Will Be Discontinued

Delta Air Lines will begin two new nonstop flights from the United States to Japan beginning April 1, 2001. Delta will operate one daily nonstop flight from New York JFK to Tokyo and one daily nonstop flight from Los Angeles to Nagoya. They will replace flights that currently operate from Portland, Ore., to Tokyo and Nagoya.

The New York to Tokyo service will be Delta’s first nonstop service from New York to Japan, pending notification to the U.S. and Japanese governments. Delta’s Los Angeles to Nagoya service will be the only daily, nonstop service between those two cities.

"These new flights will provide greater opportunities for U.S. travelers and shippers to use Delta service to Japan based on Delta’s extensive network and convenient connections," said Leo F. Mullin, Delta chairman and chief executive officer. "This service builds upon Delta’s established leadership role in the New York market, while enhancing our Asian network."

JFK is Delta’s largest international gateway, with service to 20 nonstop destinations in Europe. This year, the airline started new service from New York to Lyon, France and Venice, Italy. Delta also has DOT applications pending for service from New York to Beijing, China, continuing to Shanghai, and from New York to Sao Paulo, Brazil, continuing to Montevideo, Uruguay.

Delta offers connecting flights from JFK to 30 destinations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Including service from all New York City area airports, Delta offers more nonstop flights to Florida than any other carrier; hourly service to Atlanta, Boston and Washington, D.C.; and hourly service on the Delta Shuttle to Boston and Washington, D.C. In addition, Delta’s expanded BusinessElite U.S. transcontinental service connects New York’s JFK airport with Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego.

The new Los Angeles service will provide travelers with connecting flights to 14 destinations in the United States and Mexico. Delta’s expanded BusinessElite U.S. transcontinental service also connects Los Angeles with daily, nonstop flights to New York JFK and Boston.

When Delta’s new flights to Japan start, the airline will have three daily, nonstop flights to Tokyo –from Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta -- and one daily, nonstop flight from Nagoya to Los Angeles, with MD-11 aircraft that feature the award-winning BusinessElite service on all flights to the United States.

Delta's goal is to become the #1 airline in the eyes of its customers, flying passengers and cargo from anywhere to everywhere. Passengers already choose to fly Delta more often than any other airline in the world on 5,244 flights each day to 339 cities in 48 countries on Delta, Delta Express, Delta Shuttle, the Delta Connection carriers, and Delta's Worldwide Partners. Delta is a founding member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance which provides customers with extensive worldwide destinations, flights and services.
