HYATT INTERNATIONAL NAMES TWO RECIPIENTS FOR "GENERAL MANAGER OF THE YEAR 1999" AWARD

Travel News Asia Date: 29 June 2000

Mr. Bernd Chorengel, president of Hyatt International Corporation, announced on 23 June at the company’s General Managers’ Meeting held in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, two recipients for the "General Manager of the Year 1999" award. Since Hyatt International has grown extensively, with a total of 77 hotels currently in operation, the company feels it is more appropriate to select two General Managers for the award - one from Asia Pacific and another from Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America - in view of the different market conditions and other factors that influence the operation of hotels in these areas.

Mr. Michel Morauw, general manager of Hyatt Regency Paris, Madeleine and Mr. Peter Stettler, regional director – Indonesia and general manager of Grand Hyatt Bali (who has since been transferred and is currently general manager at Grand Hyatt Jakarta).

Award recipients were chosen for their exceptional people and team building skills, understanding of international business, strong owner relations and support of the company’s corporate vision and mission.

Messrs. Stettler and Morauw will be awarded the “Crystal City”. This glass sculpture, designed exclusively for Hyatt International in 1986 when the competition began, represents a general manager’s efforts to deliver superior quality and service at Hyatt International hotels worldwide.

Profiles:

Stettler, a graduate of the Lausanne Hotel School and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, USA, began his career in 1982 as assistant food and beverage manager and subsequently promoted to director of food and beverage at Bali Hyatt Hotel. He then held managerial positions in Hyatt Regency Saujana, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, and Hyatt Regency Cheju, Korea before returning to Bali in 1990 to open Grand Hyatt Bali as general manager.

In 1992, he accepted additional responsibilities as regional director – Indonesia overseeing Hyatt Internationals six Indonesian hotels and in April 2000 was appointed general manager of Grand Hyatt Jakarta.

The 750 room Grand Hyatt Bali, patterned after a Balinese ‘Water Palace’ with lagoons, landscaped gardens and six swimming pools surrounding low-rise Balinese buildings is situated on the Nusa Dua peninsula in Southern Bali’s luxurious resort development and a short distance from Sanur, Kuta and the city of Denpasar. Its nine restaurants and bars, extensive Fitness and Health Centre, myriad land and water sports and cultural activities make this award-winning hotel a total destination in itself where guests do not have to leave the premises to experience Bali.

Other hotels in Indonesia include Bali Hyatt, Grand Hyatt Jakarta, Hotel Aryaduta Jakarta, Hyatt Regency Bandung, Hyatt Regency Surabaya and Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta.

Morauw, a graduate of the Lausanne Hotel School, joined Hyatt in 1984 as a corporate trainee at Hyatt Regency Washington. Following subsequent assignments in food and beverage management in Riyadh, Auckland and Casablanca, he joined the pre-opening team of Hyatt Regency Birmingham in 1990 as executive assistant manager - food and beverage. In 1992, Morauw was appointed project manager for Hyatt Regency Paris - Charles de Gaulle and in 1993 became the resident manager. In 1996, Morauw was appointed general manager to the boutique 86 guestroom luxury hotel.

Hyatt Regency Paris-Madeleine is located on the bustling Boulevard Malesherbes in the heart of Paris - Europe's City of Light. The hotel is close to the fashionable Rue de Faubourg St Honoré, the Opéra, the Champs Elysées and many more famous landmarks. Two restaurants serve contemporary cuisine in a light and welcoming setting full of Parisian charm, a favourite with the local community and a smart venue for business lunches and dinners.
