Oberoi Group announces opening of The Oberoi, Mauritius

Travel News Asia Date: 24 October 2000

The Oberoi Group announced the opening of its newest luxury resort in the tropical paradise island of Mauritius. The Oberoi, Mauritius is situated in Turtle Bay at Balaclava on the North West coast of Mauritius in 20 acres of lush tropical gardens, 600 metres of ocean front, surrounded by a turquoise lagoon and a majestic range of lush green mountains on the horizon.

This unique and exclusive property of the Oberoi Group, has a very well defined open air structure, with all the public areas overlooking the sparkling lagoon. The various types of accommodation include 2 Royal Villas, 26 Luxury Villas, 16 of which are featuring their own private swimming pool and 48 Terrace Pavilions. The Resort has two restaurants, three bars, a tea pavilion and a wine cellar with cigar lounge established in a preserved historical ruin, a health spa, conference centre, two shops and two floodlit tennis courts.

The Oberoi Mauritius, continues the pioneering tradition of The Oberoi Group's intimate and romantic hotels - The Oberoi, Bali and The Oberoi, Lombok, Cecil Shimla and more recently, Rajvilas, Jaipur.

The Thai architect, of the Oberoi Mauritius Mr. Lek Bunnag, was highly influenced and inspired by the Mauritian heritage and culture. The structure of the villas and public areas is very natural and somewhat mystical. The unique style brings forth his originality by blending sobriety and elegance.

The style is enhanced by the outstanding aqua duct cascading into the natural water - lily lake, which indeed gives a very spectacular character to this property.

Two pool-bars have been specifically designed on the beachfront, where the waterline blends naturally with the blue lagoon in the background.

Mr. H.L.Lim, the interior designer, born in Singapore, has deliberately sought serenity in the décor, using soft and subtle natural colour scheme fabrics and wood, to create a soothing, light and delicate atmosphere, giving an impression of space. Photographs of local culture, Mauritian and African, enhance the character of the rooms.

The spacious bathrooms, have a large vanity table, a sunken bath and a separate shower, carefully planned, so as to overlook and open air walled tropical garden, creating a natural and peaceful environment.

The villas feature within their own private courtyard, a dining pavilion which has been purposely elevated, so that, while dining in the privacy of their courtyard, the guests may still enjoy the magnificent view over the lagoon and the Indian Ocean.

Architecture, landscape and interior design combine indigenous materials to enhance the local beauty while preserving the environment. Sugarcane leaves for the thatched roofs, volcanic boulders as natural garden walls, and many rare tropical plants and shrubs, have been used to create this exceptional, tropical and enchanting landscape, enhanced by sophisticated lightings, creating a harmonious mood.

The restaurants offer a choice from an array of mouth watering dishes, specially concocted by Chef, Jean-Marc Gonzales. His tantalizing and exquisite creations represent a refined blend of the Asian, French and Creole cuisine. Jean-Marc has astutely combined his cuisine with some of the local spices, thus, creating unique and palatable flavours.

Around the pools, light meals, tropical sorbets and cocktails are served until sunset. The wine-cellar / cigar lounge, houses an outstanding selection of the best wines from well-known vineyards of France, Spain, California, Australia, Italy and South Africa waiting to be sampled in this secluded 18th century French ruin.

The spa offers a wide range of natural and ayurvedic treatments, yoga classes, as well as relaxing body massages, body scrub and an assortment of individual beauty care programme.

To enjoy the water-sports at The Oberoi Mauritius, the Turtle Bay, a natural marine park surrounding the resort, can be discovered while enjoying some snorkelling, water-skiing, windsurfing and sailing. The hotel can also organise sunset cruises, catamarans excursions, parasailing and deep-water fishing.

Staying at the Oberoi Mauritius, is like stepping into another world......

a haven of peace and privacy....
