SINGAPORE TOURISM SECTOR PERFORMANCE AS AT SEPTEMBER 2000

Visitor Arrivals in September 2000

Arrivals in September increased by 9.8% over the same month last year, to a total of 612,380 visitors. Asia generated 11.1% growth in September, the third consecutive month of double-digit growth. The Americas posted an increase of 9.2% in visitor traffic, while Oceania registered a growth of 7.5%. Visitorship from Europe was up by 2.5%, although arrivals from Africa fell by 4.4%.

The 12 largest visitor-generating markets were:

Indonesia, the largest visitor-generating market in September, posted an increase of 9.8% in visitor arrivals.

Japan generated 89,393 visitors in September, up 6.6% compared to September 1999.

Malaysia registered a significant double-digit growth (+14.8%) for the second consecutive month.

UK arrivals rose by a mere 0.4% in September a much slower growth rates as compared to previous months. This could be due to the smaller increase in the overall UK outbound market According to statistics provided by the London-based Office of National Statistics.

Visitor arrivals from China remained buoyant up 41.9%, the highest growth rate recorded by China this year.

Visitorship from Taiwan fell by 17.2% in September, the fourth month of consecutive negative growth.

Holiday arrivals from the top 12 markets grew by 7.6%, with China (+47.6%), India (+46.1%) and South Korea (+42.8%) recording significant growth rates.

Other markets that grew include USA (+13.8%), Malaysia (+9.5%), Hong Kong (+7.0%), Australia (+6.1%), Japan (+4.9%) and Thailand (+4.7%). The three markets that posted declines were Taiwan, Indonesia and UK -- down by 18.4%, 4.5% and 1.2% respectively.

The top 12 markets registered a good growth of 6.9% in business arrivals. In particular, China exhibited a strong performance in the business segment, with an increase of 23.4%. India (+17.4%), Hong Kong (+12.4%) and Japan (+11.2%) followed with significant double-digit growths.

Visitor arrivals for January - September rose 11.5% to 5,737,505 over the same period last year.

Maximum room-nights: 877,000 (-2.3%); Available room-nights: 824,000 (-1.5%)

Gross lettings: 700,000 (+6.9%); Paid lettings: 684,000 (+7.4%)

Standard AOR: 84.3% (up 6.7 percentage points over September 1999)

Standard ARR: $130.00 (+8.8%)
