QANTAS CELEBRATES 80TH ANNIVERSARY

Travel News Asia Date: 16 November 2000

Qantas today celebrates its 80th birthday with staff and passengers in Hong Kong. As part of the celebrations, Qantas Holidays is offering discounts on all travel packages to Australia together with special airfares for all travellers leaving for Australia before mid-December.

“Today represents a significant achievement in the company’s development and we are very pleased to be able to thank all our staff and passengers who have helped make Qantas one of the world’s leading long distance airlines,” said Qantas Country Manager, Freddy Li.

“Qantas has come a long way from its early operations when it made short flights and joy rides in far north Queensland. Today, Qantas operates around 540 international flights each week and serves more than 120 destinations in 36 countries,” Mr Li said.

The airline has been operating in Hong Kong for over 50 years and has 24 flights a week to Hong Kong from Australia and has daily services between Hong Kong and Singapore.

On the ground at Hong Kong Airport today, the 80th passenger to check-in on each Qantas flight will receive a bottle of Qantas special selection champagne and 80th Anniversary chocolates will be offered to all passengers at the boarding gate and in the airport lounge. These activities run in parallel with activities in the air, as all travellers on Australian domestic and international flights ex-Australia will be offered anniversary chocolates in economy class and birthday cake in business class

All non-uniformed, Hong Kong-based Qantas staff will dress in red for the Qantas celebrations. A birthday card has been organized and signed by all the airline’s Hong Kong staff and will be sent to Qantas Chief Executive in Australia, James Strong. Staff are also being encouraged to place some spare coins in the “Change for Good” envelopes, with all the funds raised being sent to UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund).

Qantas Holidays is offering a range of discounts on travel packages to Australia and has introduced a host of special airfares. For those visiting Australia before 14 December, a discount of $500 is offered for all travel packages with a 16-day validity. From 15 to 20 December, a discount of $400 will be offered for travel packages with a 21-day validity.

Another deal on offer until 14 December includes a Qantas economy round-trip ticket to Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney for HK$5,090*. This fare includes three night’s accommodation, breakfast, airport transfers and early hotel check-in.
