Up the wall......

Travel News Asia Date: 11 October 2000

British Airways workers are going up the wall in their efforts to raise money for charity - literally!

A group of 19 employees have teamed up with nine friends and family members to trek along the Great Wall of China in aid of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF).

They aim to raise £100,000 for the charity this year and hope the China trek will contribute more than £50,000 towards the total.

The British Airways contingent is made up of 16 members of Cabin Crew and three colleagues from Cargo and Speedwing.

Most of the group flew out from Heathrow’s Terminal 4 on Friday (6 October)and will return on 15 October.

After arriving in Beijing, they will transfer to their base at Shentangyu, close to the Wall in rural China, and will walk up to 20kms each day.

Trek organiser Linda Evans, a Cabin Crew member working out of Heathrow, said: "A lot of people have warned us that it is going to be quite difficult - some parts of the wall are very steep.

"But we have all prepared well and are very excited. We are just all hoping that we can do it!

"We’d also welcome sponsorship or donations. We are meeting all the costs of the trip ourselves so are keen to raise as much for the ICRF as possible."

Cancer strikes one in three people and one in every four people die through cancer related issues.

Linda added: "Significant advances are being made in cancer research so we are not just raising money - we are raising hope, too."

Anyone who would like to support Linda and the group in their fund-raising can contact fellow walker and fundraiser Rushna Master on (44-1932) 248 751.
