Low Cost Airline Symposium Opens in Macau

Travel News Asia 26 April 2004

The potential for Low Cost Airlines in China and North Asia is the key theme of a two-day Symposium, which opened in Macau today.

The Symposium, with some 200 delegates in attendance from across Asia, North America and Europe, was coordinated by leading aviation industry consultants, the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation.

The Centre’s Managing Director, Peter Harbison stated, “I am pleased that so many delegates, including a very strong contingent of airlines, could be present in Macau to consider this vital issue.

“Low cost airlines have made big inroads into all other established markets – now it’s North Asia’s turn to look to what the future holds”, said Mr Harbison.

“Macau, with its very liberal aviation policy and excellent geographic position is extremely well placed to take advantage of the great potential growth offered by low cost airlines in this region”, said Mr Harbison.

Speakers will be canvassing the opportunities and challenges facing low cost airlines in China and North Asia. Among the new breed of low cost airlines speaking at the event include Virgin Blue and Nok Air, while full service airlines, including Japan Airlines, Philippine Airlines, All Nippon Airways and the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines will address the incumbents’ perspective.

Civil aviation departments, including Macau and Hong Kong are presenting their views. Leading suppliers, including LSG SkyChefs, Matsushita, Airbus and Boeing are presenting on the solutions and equipment low cost airlines will require to be successful in this region.
