Travel News Asia 25 November 2004

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is to add two new towers of hotel rooms, serviced apartments and offices to the existing 502-room Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao in China's Shandong province.

The new addition, expected to open late 2007, designed by Hong Kong-based architect Wong & Tung International Limited, will feature a 16-floor deluxe tower of 190 large guestrooms and 16 serviced apartments, and a 31-floor apartment/office tower with 80 serviced apartments and 22,700 square-metre office spaces.

Each guestroom will feature sea views and a minimum floor space of 54 square metres. The hotel's new luxury tower features special privileges such as private meeting room, express check-in and check-out service, and exclusive club lounge for daily breakfast and cocktails, in addition to standard Shangri-La amenities such as 24-hour room service, same day laundry and valet service, satellite TV, data ports and broadband internet service.

The new towers' dining and entertainment options will include a lobby lounge and speciality restaurant, to complement the existing hotel's Chinese restaurant, lounge, bar and coffee shop. The new meeting and banquet facilities will feature a 2,000 square-metre grand ballroom and eight additional function rooms. Other business and recreational facilities such as a business centre, health club, spa, and indoor swimming pool will also be available in the new towers.

"These expanded services and facilities will cater to the needs of business travellers from the region and internationally, and will reinforce our position as the leading luxury hotel in Qingdao," said Frank Wen, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao.

The picturesque city of Qingdao is best known for its charming colonial architecture and is home to China's largest brewery. The hotel is conveniently located on Xiang Gang Zhong Road in the commercial district of Qingdao city, surrounded by reminders of German colonial architecture as well as scenic beaches, parks and Mountain Lao. It is a 40-minute drive from Qingdao international airport, and is within walking distance to municipal government building and the city's landmark World Trade Centre.
