KLM Boeing robbed at Gunpoint in Johannesburg

Travel News Asia 17 September 2004

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight KL591 was robbed at gunpoint in Johannesburg on September 16. The group of armed men struck while freight was being unloaded on the ramp.

The police intervened and shots were exchanged, but neither passengers nor flight and ground personnel sustained any injuries. The gunmen escaped in the ensuing chaos.

The area around the aircraft was subsequently sealed off for several hours, allowing police to conduct their investigation. Engineers later subjected the Boeing 747-400 Combi, PH-BFM, to a thorough inspection, but could find no damage to the aircraft. The flight eventually departed with a delay of more than 4 hours.

KLM said it will give no further details of what was stolen. In response to the incident, the airline is reviewing the procedures regarding all shipments of valuables.
