Travel News Asia 9 January 2003

Meli Bali Villas & Spa Resort, the first Asian resort of European hotel chain Sol Meli Hotels & Resorts, was recently the proud recipient of the prestigious Green Globe 21 Standard for Accommodation certification. The award is part of a global environmental programme that recognizes travel and tourism industries efforts in sustainable conservation of the natural environment. This is the third consecutive year that Meli Bali Villas & Spa Resort has received the Green Globe 21 certification.

The hotel also recently received the Tri Hita Karana Gold Medal 2002, its second consecutive annual win of the local environmental award based on the philosophies of the Balinese Hindu community. The Tri Hita Karana award was launched in 2000, during which Meli Bali Villas & Spa Resort received the Silver Medal. In 1999 and 2000, the hotel also received the Green Globe Commendation presented by the World Travel & Tourism Council.

An active player in sustainable tourism development, Meli Bali Villas & Spa Resort follows the guidelines of the Sol Meli Environmental Protection Manual, and has in place a sophisticated environmental management programme that incorporates responsible practices such as waste recycling, energy saving, sound pollution reduction and the use of environmentally-friendly products and materials.

In addition, the hotel has introduced innovative measures to conserve the natural environment such as the creation of the first biological garden in Nusa Dua, eliminating the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and launching the Fly Project, which rescues injured birds and nurse them back to health before their release into the wild.
