AirAsia launches Kuala Lumpur - Phuket route

Travel News Asia 8 December 2003

AirAsia today started its eagerly awaited low cost flights between Kuala Lumpur and Phuket.

Flight AK 870 from Kuala Lumpur to Phuket departed at 10.40am carrying 131 guests who were earlier greeted at the boarding gates by AirAsia Chairman, YBhg. Dato’ Pahamin A. Rajab and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tony Fernandes.

The announcement of AirAsia taking its red hot low fares to the island of Phuket, known as the southern paradise for its magnificent coves and bays, powdery, palm-fringed and white beaches, was made back in November 2003.

Prices for the new route start from an affordable RM 89.99 one way.

One daily flight will initially be introduced from KL International Airport (KLIA) to Phuket International Airport and vice versa.

The flight schedule for Phuket is as follows:

Flight From Departure/Arrival Flight No. Frequency
Kuala Lumpur - Phuket 1040 / 1055 (local time) AK 870 Daily
Phuket - Kuala Lumpur 1135 / 1350 (local time) AK 870 Daily

"These are exciting times for AirAsia. In less than two years of operations we have expanded from four to thirteen domestic destinations, operate our service from 2 hubs based in KL and JB, and carried over three million guests. And now we are taking our friendly service to Phuket. Finally, travelers and holidaymakers have an affordable means to connect between Kuala Lumpur and Phuket. The attractive fares that AirAsia has to offer will certainly play a part to boost and grow tourism industries in both countries.” said Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia.
