SriLankan Airlines appoints new Manager to head Europe, Middle East and Americas

Travel News Asia 6 November 2003

Barry Brown, formerly the General Manager Australia and New Zealand for SriLankan Airlines, has been promoted to Regional Manager Europe, Middle East and the Americas.

Mr Brown - an Australian national - transferred from Sydney to SriLankan’s  Colombo headquarters two years ago to become Regional Manager Asia Pacific, a role which was later expanded to include Sri Lanka.

He played a key role in rebuilding the airline following terrorist attacks in Colombo in 2001, followed by the post September 11 downturn and global slowdown in air travel.

In his new role as head of commercial operations for Europe, Middle East and the Americas, Mr Brown is responsible for approximately 50 per cent of the airline’s revenues.

The region for which he is now responsible covers online SriLankan Airlines services from Colombo to London, Frankfurt, Paris and Zurich, and to nine Mid Eastern cities – Dubai, Kuwait, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Amman, Riyadh, Doha and Dammam.

SriLankan Airlines recently introduced two additional Airbus A340 aircraft - increasing from three to five of this type - which initially will enable it to introduce more flights between Colombo and London, Frankfurt and Zurich.

Mr Brown is also responsible for extensive sales responsibilities throughout Europe, and in the growing markets of the Americas, where there is a significant population of Sri Lankan and Indian nationals.

His new role is one of two Regional Manager positions in the airline following a recent restructure of the senior management group.

Mr Mohammed Fazeel has also been appointed Regional Manager Subcontinent and Asia Pacific.
